  • Emphatic Interpretations of Object Marking in Bantu Languages

Open Access•Hannah Lippard, Justine Sikuku et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•2024

This paper investigates emphatic interpretations of object marking in various Bantu languages. We focus on Lubukusu (spoken in Kenya) and Cinyungwe (spoken in Mozambique) in particular, but we also report initial evidence from other Bantu languages (mainly Tiriki, Wanga, and Ikalanga). In these languages, OM-doubling—the co-occurrence of an object marker with a lexical DP object—is infelicitous in neutral pragmatic contexts. However, we show that…

  • The typology of actual clauses in Eastern Bantu

Open Access•Justine Sikuku, Justine Mukhwana Sikuku et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistique et langues africaines•2023

This article reports on the existence of actual clause morphology and interpretation in selected Bantu languages. Essentially, we treat the actual clause as an embedded assertion whereby the utterer is committed not only to the truth of the proposition described by the actual clause: It must be the case that the event in the proposition cannot be unrealized (or describe a future state) at the time of the utterance. The Bantu languages in our samp…

  • Pragmatic effects of clitic doubling: Two kinds of object markers in Lubukusu

    Justine M Sikuku, Justine Sikuku et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 54

Object markers (OMs) in Bantu languages have long been argued to be either incorporated pronouns or agreement morphemes, distinguished mainly by their ability (or not) to co-occur with (i.e. double)in situobjects. Lubukusu appears to be an instance of OMs-as-incorporated pronouns, as OMs in neutral discourse contexts cannot doublein situobjects in a broad range of syntactic contexts. As we show, however, certain pragmatic contexts in fact do lice…
