The Early Childhood Care and Education Landscape in Ascending Neighborhoods
This paper descriptively documents the early childhood care and education (ECE) landscape in neighborhoods that experienced socioeconomic (SES) ascent and descent in the Chicago Metropolitan Area (MSA) between 2009 and 2019. Using data from the Illinois Early Childhood Asset Map and the American Community Survey, we analyze changes in ECE seats across provider types. SES ascent was most prevalent in Cook County, where zip code tabulation areas (Z…
Climate of Exclusion
Deportations of immigrants from the United States have grown substantially over the past two decades. While existing research has examined how changes to US laws and policies have contributed to this increase, less attention has been given to how conditions in immigrants’ countries of origin shape deportation patterns. This article investigates how an important external shock—home-country natural disasters—influences immigrant removals from the U…
Representative Bureaucracy Buffering Adverse Policy Climates
This study explores the role of representative bureaucracy in buffering the impact of adverse policy environments on immigrants' access to public benefits. Specifically, we examine whether and to what extent a more representative government workforce influences immigrant families' participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and moderates the impact of unfavorable immigrant policy climates. Analyzing data on 49 states fro…
Community violence and early childhood language development
This paper estimates the acute effect of community-level homicides on early childhood language development and explores the moderating role of maternal efficacy and satisfaction in Chile. It uses data from the 2017 wave of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Survey of Chilean Children (N = 1194, Mage: 52.8 months, 52% girls). Children in municipalities with homicides 1 month before the Peabody Picture Vocabulary assessment scored between 0.18 and 0.…
Public mental health facility closures and criminal justice contact in Chicago
Research summary In 2012, Chicago closed half of its public mental health clinics, which provide services to those in need regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. Critics of the closures argued that they would result in service shortages and divert untreated patients to the criminal justice system. We explore this claim by examining whether and to what extent the closures increased criminal justice contact. Using a difference‐in‐d…

An Empirical Analysis of the Link Between Built Environment and Safety in Chicago’s Transit Station Areas
Problem, research strategy, and findings Considering that safety is a key environmental factor that promotes health, understanding the relationship between built environment features around transit station areas and crime may shed light on how to foster healthy communities. Yet, there is limited work that has examined how the combination of different built environment features around transit correlate with different crimes. We addressed this issu…
The effects of charter schools on neighborhood and school segregation
This paper estimates the effect of charter schools on the diversity of nearby traditional public schools (TPSs) and neighborhoods in New York City. We employ a difference-in-differences approach that exploits the variation in the expansion of the charter sector between grades in the same school. This approach allows us to isolate the effect of charter schools from other neighborhood demographic changes. Our results show small positive effects of …
Exposure to local violent crime and childhood obesity and fitness
The academic effects of chronic exposure to neighbourhood violence
This paper estimates the causal effect of repeated exposure to violent crime on test scores in New York City. We use two empirical strategies; value-added models linking student performance on standardised exams to violent crimes on students’ residential block, and a regression discontinuity approach that identifies the acute effect of additional crime exposure within a one-week window. Exposure to violent crime reduces academic performance. Valu…
Neighborhood Outcomes
Neighborhood outcomes are the tendency for neighborhood‐level characteristics to affect individual‐level outcomes. Neighborhoods can affect individuals in a variety of ways including access to high quality schools, employment opportunities, and amenities such as grocery stores and open spaces. Identifying neighborhood effects is difficult both because it is hard to define what is meant by a neighborhood and because individuals tend to sort across…
School Climate and the Impact of Neighborhood Crime on Test Scores
Does school climate ameliorate or exacerbate the impact of neighborhood violent crime on test scores? Using administrative data from the New York City Department of Education and the New York City Police Department, we find that exposure to violence in the residential neighborhood and an unsafe climate at school lead to substantial test score losses in English language arts (ELA). Middle school students exposed to neighborhood violent crime befor…
