  • The go-along method with older adults

Open Access•Chiara Natalie Focacci, Sarah Harper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging Studies•2026

This article examines the go-along method as a transformative, participatory approach for exploring how older adults experience aging through movement and interaction within their everyday environments. Drawing on a UK-based study, Enabling Person-Centered Integrated Care Networks (EPICS), it demonstrates how walking alongside participants allows researchers to access embodied, sensory, and relational dimensions of daily life that conventional in…

  • Designing gender-inclusive data systems in small-scale fisheries

    Open Access•Sarah J Harper, Meryl J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2026•Referências: 41

Gender equality is a ubiquitous national goal, yet sectoral gender data gaps to support this goal persist. These gaps are both structural and sexist, concealing women's contributions and impeding actions that would strengthen livelihoods and economic development, food security, and environmental sustainability. The small-scale fisheries sector offers a cogent example of this phenomenon. Building on lessons from the Illuminating Hidden Harvests in…

  • Commercial fisher perceptions illuminate a need for social justice considerations in navigating climate change impacts on fisheries systems

    Open Access•Sarah Harper, Sarah J Harper et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2023

Climate change will amplify stress on marine systems already challenged by conflicts and inequities relating to fisheries access, management decisions, and ocean uses across sectors. Understanding how those most connected to fisheries perceive the risks associated with climate change is critical to developing effective responses and establishing management priorities. Adaptation planning efforts may be hindered by perceptions of unequal or unfair…

    Open Access•Nathan J Bennett, Andrés M Cisneros-Montemayor et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2019•Citada por: 14

  • Evidence for overfishing on pristine coral reefs

Krista Greer, Sarah J Harper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Indian Ocean Region•2014•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

The fisheries statistics systems of many countries are performing poorly, often failing to report on small-scale catches, particularly from subsistence and recreational fisheries. These deficiencies, which lead to the underestimation of catches, are particularly evident in overseas territories of developed countries. This study is an attempt to remedy this for the years 1950–2010 for the Australia Indian Ocean Territories, an area from which litt…

  • Ethics versus morality

    Open Access•Sarah J Harper•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2009

I explicate the distinction between ethics and morality in terms of four central contrasts, and argue (1) that moral theories that embrace the implicit divide are both theoretically and practically problematic in their failure to meet certain widely accepted standards of theoretical coherence and in their resulting propensity to generate indeterminable conflicts among norms, and (2) that social roles represent one aspect of the moral life that ca…

  • Families in Ageing Societies

Various techniques of cluster analysis are applied to 125 civil parishes in southern Hampshire and 55 civil parishes in southern Staffordshire. Despite the differing infrastructure, the analysis identifies within both a similar spectrum of settlements defined by size, tenancy, and age structure: small Established villages with a high proportion of tied and rented property, a high percentage of village workers and typically an old age profile; larg…

  • The Kinship Network of the Rural Aged

    Open Access•Sarah Harper, Sarah J Harper•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•1987•Citada por: 5•Referências: 24

Analysis of the kin support networks of rural elderly, resident in Staffordshire and Hampshire, indicated that the most important factor affecting both the patterns and relationships of the kin network is the residential mobility of the nuclear family and its members. The study revealed the importance of recognising three broad groupings of elderly: the indigenous aged, who typically possess an extended local kin network; the retired inmigrants w…

  • The Rural-Urban Interface in England

    Sarah Harper, Sarah J Harper•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1987•Citada por: 13•Referências: 3

The post war years have seen a steady flow of inmigration into the rural hinterlands of conurbations, emanating both from the surrounding rural areas and from the urban complexes themselves. By 1981 over one-fifth of Britain's population was resident in a rural district, the majority falling within zones close to urban centres. This study of southern Staffordshire, part of the rural hinterland of the West Midlands Conurbation, and southern Hampsh…
