  • Charles (Chuck) Henry Racine (1940–2014)

    Open Access•Matthew Sturm•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2014

In the summer of 1972, Chuck Racine, a young plant ecologist from Duke University, came to Alaska and found his calling studying the Arctic tundra. The discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in 1968, and the signing into law of the Alaska Native Claim Settlement Act (ANCSA) in 1971, cleared the way for one of the greatest acts of land conservation in history: the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA).As part of the run-up to t…

  • Environmental Change and Potential Impacts

Open Access•Bill Streever, Robert Suydam et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2011

"Appropriate management requires information that can be gained only through applied research. We provide a brief history of applied research on the North Slope, introduce the North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) as an organization tasked with improving the coordination of science across the region, and posit applied science priorities that are essential for successful and informed management."

  • Multiple Effects of Changes in Arctic Snow Cover

  • Fewer Ups and Downs

Susan T Charles, Gloria Luong et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2010•Citada por: 6•Referências: 8

The current study examined age differences in daily stressors, positive events (uplifts), and their associations with emotional experience among healthy older women. Women (N = 101, 63-93 years old) reported their daily experiences across 1 week. Older age was related to fewer stressors and less frequent negative affect. However, the association between negative affect and age was no longer significant after accounting for the occurrence of daily…

  • The evidence for shrub expansion in Northern Alaska and the Pan‐Arctic

Open Access•Ken D Tape, KEN TAPE et al.•ARTICLE•Global Change Biology•2006

One expected response to climate warming in the Arctic is an increase in the abundance and extent of shrubs in tundra areas. Repeat photography shows that there has been an increase in shrub cover over the past 50 years in northern Alaska. Using 202 pairs of old and new oblique aerial photographs, we have found that across this region spanning 620 km east to west and 350 km north to south, alder, willow, and dwarf birch have been increasing, with…

  • Evidence and Implications of Recent Climate Change in Northern Alaska and Other Arctic Regions

    Open Access•Larry D Hinzman, Neil D Bettez et al.•ARTICLE•Climatic Change•2005

  • Role of Land-Surface Changes in Arctic Summer Warming

Open Access•F Stuart Chapin, Matthew Sturm et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2005

A major challenge in predicting Earth's future climate state is to understand feedbacks that alter greenhouse-gas forcing. Here we synthesize field data from arctic Alaska, showing that terrestrial changes in summer albedo contribute substantially to recent high-latitude warming trends. Pronounced terrestrial summer warming in arctic Alaska correlates with a lengthening of the snow-free season that has increased atmospheric heating locally by abo…

  • The Spirit of the Arctic and the Next Generation of Arctic Researchers

    Open Access•Matthew Sturm•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2000

Last September I was asked to give the closing talk at the American Association for the Advancement of Science .... My topic: Who will be the Arctic researchers of the next 50 years? ... With at least six trends at work - declining length of field time, increasing autonomous and remotely sensed data collection, increasing funding in the U.S., more scientists chasing the funding, a shift from regional to topical focus, and an increasing resident p…

  • Formation of a Strandline during the 1984 Jökulhlaup of Strandline Lake

    Open Access•Matthew Sturm•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1986

Strandlines, diagnostic features of glacier-dammed lakes, may not always represent highwater markers. They can apparently be formed during jökulhlaups. An example of the formation of a strandline during the 1984 draining of Strandline Lake is given.Key words: strandline, terracette, jökulhlaup, ice-dammed lake, Alaska
