  • Gaming, Governance and Public Policy in Macao

Newman M K Lam, Ian Scott et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Gaming, Governance and Public…•2011

The small city of Macao—formerly a Portuguese colony, now a Special Administrative Region of China—liberalised its gaming industry in 2002. Since then a score of new casinos have been built and millions of gamblers have flooded in from mainland China. Per capita income has more than doubled in five years and the gaming operators have outstripped their Las Vegas counterparts in revenue and profits. But rapid economic growth has also brought social…

  • Revelation and Human Artefact

Ian W Scott•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2010

In sharp contrast to other highly Hellenized Jewish works, the Book of Aristeas depicts the Pentateuch as a purely human composition. Moses was endowed by God with a prodigious intellect so that he could compose a law superior to any other, but Israel’s legislator received no direct revelation or guidance. Likewise, the LXX translation is depicted as a purely human achievement. If the law is “inspired” for the author of Aristeas, it is only in th…

  • Common Ground? The Role of Galatians 2.16 in Paul's Argument

    Open Access•Ian W Scott•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2007

Several scholars have argued that Paul's statements about ‘justification’ in Gal 2.16 are intended to serve as common ground with his Galatian opponents. Yet Paul seems to argue polemically for the same idea in 2.21. Moreover, the structure of Paul's diatribal rhetoric in 2.16–21 suggests that Paul thought his statements in 2.16 would be controversial. When we observe that Paul continues to argue through chs. 3 and 4 for this same understanding o…

  • Implicit Epistemology in the Letters of Paul

    Ian W Scott•BOOK•Implicit Epistemology in the…•2006

Ian W. Scott explores the way of knowing which is assumed by Paul's argumentation in his letters. Paul presumes that a kind of hermeneutical reason plays a central role in religious knowing, once it has been freed from the moral corruption endemic to human beings. His theological knowledge is structured as a story, and ethical reasoning involves »emplotting« human beings within that story. Paul never tries to justify the narrative itself, but his…
