Black and Latine sexual minoritised individuals’ experiences accessing HIV prevention services in US medical settings
Healthcare settings are contexts where Black and Latine sexual minoritised individuals experience stigma when accessing HIV services. Negative experiences have the potential to shape an individual’s beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours regarding future HIV prevention. To understand their experiences accessing HIV preventive care, this study used an abductive approach to explore (1) Black and Latine sexual minoritised individuals’ experiences with p…
Latent Profiles of Disordered Eating Behaviors Associated with Bullying and Mental Health Among Sexual and Gender Diverse Youth
OBJECTIVES: This study examined associations of social identity and experience variables with specific patterns of disordered eating behaviors among sexual and gender diverse youth, a population at elevated risk of disordered eating behaviors and eating disorders. METHODS: = 10,743), we determined profiles of engagement across three disordered eating behaviors: restriction, binge-eating, and purging through Latent Profile Analysis and examined th…
Identity Gaps and LGBTQIA+ Students’ Social Connection, Stigma, and Activism
For LGBTQIA+ individuals, identity development and exploration are salient experiences that may be further impacted by other major life events, including moving away to college. Using the communication theory of identity, we examined identity gaps (i.e., inconsistencies between various frames of identity) between LGBTQIA+ college students’ personal identity and their enacted, relational, and communal identities and their link to social connection…
Investigating differences in LGBTQIA+ students’ identity gaps during the semester and academic breaks
Guided by the communication theory of identity, we explored gaps between LGBTQIA+ students’ personal, relational, enacted, and communal frames of identity while on campus during the semester compared to during academic breaks. LGBTQIA+ students (N = 234) in the United States completed an online survey. The results indicated that LGBTQIA+ students reported the most intense identity gaps during the semester between the personal and relational frame…
Changes in LGBTQ+ Students’ Sexual and Gender Identity Expression Since the Transition to College
The transition to college is a time of developmental and contextual changes, particularly for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, or other non-heterosexual or non-cisgender (LGBTQ+) emerging adults, for whom the LGBTQ+-inclusiveness of their social environment may also change. We coded open-ended survey responses from LGBTQ+ college students in the United States ( N = 140, M age = 19.7) who described interpersonal and insti…
Associations Between State-Level Structural Stigma and Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Mental Health
Perceptions of bias in HIV prevention services, happiness with social support, and anticipated PrEP stigma among Black and Latine/x sexual and gender diverse individuals
Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective preventive treatment for HIV, anticipated PrEP stigma can hinder uptake. Perceptions of bias in HIV prevention and evaluations (e.g., happiness) tied to social support among Black and Latine/x sexual and gender diverse (SGD) individuals could be important correlates of anticipated PrEP stigma. To further this line of inquiry, a national sample of 872 Black and Latine/x SGD individuals…
Identity outness to family among gender diverse sexual minority youth
Gender diverse sexual minority youth (SMY) must manage disclosure decisions and the related implications of disclosure for two minoritized identities. However, little is known about the patterns of outness for gender diverse SMY or how these patterns are associated with their well-being. Using a sample of 4,200 gender diverse SMY ages 13-17 years old ( M age = 15.43), this paper used latent profile analysis to examine diverse patterns of outness …
Measurement invariance of the LGBT People of Color Microaggressions Scale among LGBTQ + youth
The LGBT People of Color Microaggressions Scale (LGBT-PCMS) is a widely used measure of intersectional microaggression experiences among sexual and gender minority people of color. Although it is widely used-and increasingly used in adolescent and young adult samples-it is unknown whether the LGBT-PCMS demonstrates similar measurement properties across subgroups of sexual and gender minority youth of color (SGMYOC). Among 4142 SGMYOC (ages 13-17)…
Stress of being outed to parents, LGBTQ family support, and depressive symptoms among sexual and gender diverse youth
Limited scholarship has explored how a lack of agency in identity disclosure (being "outed") to parents is associated with mental health experiences of sexual and gender diverse youth (SGDY). With a national sample of SGDY (N = 9272; 66.8% White non-Hispanic) aged 13-17 (M age = 15.63, SD = 1.24), this study first compared social position differences between SGDY who were outed to their parents compared to those not outed, and second, investigate…
Sexual Identity Disclosure and Alcohol Experiences Among LGBTQ+ Adolescents
Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) report greater alcohol use in comparison to their heterosexual counterparts. Prior research has found that elevated alcohol use among SGMY can be explained by minority stress experiences. Sexual identity outness may be another factor that drives alcohol use among SGMY, given that outness is associated with alcohol use among older sexual and gender minority samples. We examined how patterns of sexual identit…
PrEP Stigma and logistical barriers remain significant challenges in curtailing HIV transmission among Black and Hispanic/Latinx cisgender sexual minority men and transgender women in the US
Despite advancements in HIV prevention, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), there remain inequities in accessing PrEP among Black and Hispanic/Latinx cisgender sexual minority men and transgender women (SMMTW). Researchers have documented multiple barriers to PrEP uptake, yet the relative impacts of PrEP internalized stigma and logistical barriers (e.g., Cost; time) to PrEP use are understudied. It may be meaningful to investigate potential …
Who is using PrEP on-demand? Factors associated with PrEP use modality among Black and Hispanic/Latino emerging adults
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use, anticipated PrEP stigma, and bisexual identity among a Black and Hispanic/Latino sexual and gender diverse sample
Black and Hispanic/Latino sexual minority men and gender diverse (SMMGD) individuals are disproportionately impacted by the HIV epidemic. Uptake and adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is suboptimal among SMMGD Black and Hispanic/Latino individuals, but most research has approached this population as homogenous (e.g., a group operationalized as men who have sex with men). Bisexual men are less likely to disclose their sexual identity and…
