  • Estimating the National High School Dropout Rate

    Open Access•Robert Kominski•ARTICLE•Demography•1990•Citada por: 8•Referências: 2

Recent interest has focused on the high school dropout rate as one indicator of the national education picture. Empirical estimates of this “rate” vary considerably, because these estimates are poorly defined. This article reviews some of the current measures and presents a new measure of the high school dropout rate—the proportion of high school students who drop out in a defined period of time (1 year). The estimates show that the national year…

  • Estimation of adult mortality using forward and backward projections

    Alberto Palloni, Robert Kominski•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1984•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

In this paper it is shown that, contrary to our intuitive understanding of the nature of population projection, the estimation of adult intercensal mortality leads to different results depending on whether forward or backward projection of the population is used. From this result a simple procedure is developed that yields estimates of the completeness of adult mortality registration. Finally, the nature and performance of a variety of methods th…
