  • Ring‐Width Dendrochronology, Isotopic Dendrochronology and Radiocarbon Dating of Timbers From the Spire Scaffold of Salisbury Cathedral, Wiltshire, England

    Open Access•Kutsi D Akcicek, Kutsi Akcicek et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026•Referências: 26

Ten timbers from the spire scaffold of Salisbury Cathedral were dated using a combination of ring‐width dendrochronology, stable oxygen isotopic dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating. Seven timbers were coeval and assigned a combined empirical felling date range of 1352–1378, which was further refined to 1351–1359 (OxCal 95.4%). These results would indicate that the scaffold was not a 1320s construction but instead built later in the 14th centu…

  • Oxygen isotope dating of oak and elm timbers from the portcullis windlass, Byward Tower, Tower of London

    Open Access•Neil J Loader, D Miles et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2020

A new isotopic method for dating oak and non-oak (elm) timbers is applied to samples from the portcullis windlass mechanism in the Byward Tower, Tower of London. This structure was previously sampled for ring width dendrochronology but failed to date. Successful application of the stable oxygen isotope dating method returns a felling date of winter AD 1656/7 for the oak timbers used to construct the gear wheel and a date of after AD 1648 (terminu…

  • Stable Isotope Dating of Historic Buildings

    D Miles, D H Miles et al.•ARTICLE•Vernacular Architecture•2019•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

The recent development of an oxygen isotope (δ18O) master chronology for south central England (1200–2000 AD) has successfully demonstrated reliable cross-dating between the master chronology and undated samples from vernacular and high-status buildings. The method is well suited to complacent, wide-ringed samples, which are commonplace throughout the UK historic buildings archive and often fail to date by ring-width dendrochronology, or remain u…

  • The Earliest Tree-Ring Dated Base-Cruck House

    N W Alcock, D H Miles et al.•ARTICLE•Vernacular Architecture•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

A commission from the owner to attempt to date a fragmentary truss has led to the recognition of the truss at 21 High Street, Alcester as the earliest domestic base cruck yet identified, with construction probably in the summer of 1264. It belonged in the fifteenth century to the Burdet family of local gentry, and the quality of the house suggests that it was of similar status when built. It is particularly notable as having a single tiebeam. A s…

    N W Alcock, D H Miles et al.•ARTICLE•Vernacular Architecture•2012•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

Nos 1–2 Ufton Fields, Ufton, is a notable survival of an early fifteenth-century peasant house, most probably associated with a one- or two-yardland holding. The architectural evidence demonstrates that it comprised three bays, all single-storeyed, with a single-bay chamber and a two-bay hall. Although one end truss has been removed, the truss numbering indicates that this house is complete as it survives. The consistent felling dates of the prim…

  • Refinements in the Interpretation of Tree-ring Dates for Oak Building Timbers in England and Wales

    D H Miles, Dan Miles•ARTICLE•Vernacular Architecture•2006•Citada por: 18

This paper summarises recent research into the interpretation of dates derived through dendrochronology in mainland Britain. Whilst the science of dating timbers through dendrochronology has advanced significantly over the past two decades, the interpretation of these tree-ring dates, either with or without complete sapwood, has not developed to the same degree. Where precise felling dates are available from samples with bark edge, further resear…

  • A Tudor cupboard at Cotehele, Cornwall

Nicholas Riall, Rachel Hunt et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•2006•Referências: 1

The presence of the remains of a Tudor cupboard displayed at Cotehele (Cornwall) has for many years been explained by the marriage of Catherine, the widow of Sir Gruffydd ap Rhys (the son of Sir Rhys ap Thomas, a leading figure in south Wales during the reigns of both Henry VII and Henry VIII) to Sir Piers Edgcumbe in 1523; thus dating this piece of furniture to the 1520s. By contrast, costume experts have always considered that the piece should …

  • Edward III's Lodge at Odiham, Hampshire

    Edward Roberts, D H Miles•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1995•Referências: 4

ODIHAM LODGE, in NE. Hampshire, was built by Edward III during the decade before his death in 1377. It is a rare example of a park lodge built for a medieval English monarch which has survived to the present day. As such, it contributes to our knowledge of the appearance and function of such lodges. Its interest is enhanced by secure tree-ring dates and by the survival of the original building accounts
