The excavation of a square-ditched barrow and other cropmarks at Boysack Mills, Inverkeilor, Angus
This report describes the excavation in 1977 of a square-ditched barrow probably dating from the first or second century AD, together with the damaged remains of a second square-ditched barrow, a crescentic feature (possibly the very damaged remains of a ring-ditch or ring-ditch house), and a circular enclosure, possibly of Neo date and measuring 18cm in diameter. Excavation of a kerbed funerary monument at Stoneyfield, Raigmore, Inverness, Highland, 1972–3
Rescue excavation at Stoneyfield was undertaken on behalf of the then Ministry of Public Buildings and Works (Scotland) in 1972–3. The results suggest that this multi-period monument can be divided broadly into three major phases of construction. In Phase 1 a series of pits were dug in the early third millennium BC, one containing Grooved Ware and a second a cup-marked stone. In Phase 2 further pits were dug, again some with Grooved Ware. Excavation and Survey at Watchfield, Oxfordshire, 1983–92
Geophysical survey and excavation have demonstrated that iron age settlement features and early Anglo-Saxon burials discovered during road construction in 1983 were part of an extensive multi-period site, now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. From 1946 to 1952. excavations were undertaken in advance of destruction by gravel workings of a series of Neolithic and Early Bronze Age monuments at Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxon. These included a long enclosure, a cursus, a double ditched henge, pit circles and ring ditches with primary and secondary cremation burials and a notable Beaker burial. The excavation of an oval crop mark close to the Abingdon causewayed enclosure showed a complex sequence of development, starting with a rectangular ditched enclosure and most probably ending with an oval barrow of a type with parallels elsewhere in lowland England. A Viking burial from Kneep, Uig, Isle of Lewis
A rich female grave found in 1979 contained two gilt-bronze oval brooches, forty-four glass beads, a bone comb, an iron knife, whetstone, bone needle case and needles, iron sickle, bronze ringed pin, bronze buckle and strap-end, iron rivet and textile fragments. Brooches and pin suggest a late 10th century date. AR
The excavation of a Mesolithic horizon at 13-24 Castle Street, Inverness
A microlithic flint industry dating to c 5000 be was found, containing 137 retouched pieces and 4700 other fragments. No structures were identified. The occupation level in which the flints were found was sealed by a complex soil horizon that included two marine transgressions
Bronze Age Cremation Cemeteries in the East Midlands
Two Bronze Age cremation cemeteries excavated between 1968 and 1975 are reported and discussed. At Coneygre Farm, Notts., fifty-one cremations were excavated, thirty-one in pots, six in cists, and fourteen uncontained. Cremations were deposited in a roughly linear arrangement and no barrow was found. At Pasture Lodge Farm, Lincs., twenty-seven pots were found, of which twenty-five had associated cremations, and fifteen further sherds could repres…
Cremations
All the extant cremation deposits were examined. The following details are given in the table below to convey some impression of the character of each deposit: the weight, the maximum length of the largest surviving piece of bone, and an assessment of the general size of the fragments. Large bones have a maximum dimension over 50 mm, medium are equal to or between 25 and 50 mm and small are less than 25 mm
A Multi-phased Barrow and Possible Henge Monument at West Ashby, Lincolnshire
Excavation of the surviving half of a barrow, identified from aerial photographs as having three concentric ditches, revealed a sequence of at least six major alterations. The site may originally have been a Class I henge monument subsequently adapted for use as a barrow. A cist was discovered during ploughing on 10 December 1979.It was a simple floored and capped stone box; it contained an adult male skeleton with a Developed to Late Northern beaker placed to the left of the skull.A radiocarbon date suggests it belongs in the last half of the third millenium BC

A low rectangular cairn covered the burial in a long cist of an adult female marked by a Class I Pictish symbol stone bearing an incised double crescent, snake and Z-rod and mirror and comb. A reconsideration of the 'Ardiffery' finds, Cruden, Aberdeenshire
The provenances and contents are distinguished of two groups of artefacts from Cruden which are commonly confused in archaeological literature. A cist found at Uppermill, Cruden (NK 053370) in 1821 contained partial inhumations of a man and a child, pig bones, a wristguard, seven barbed-and-tanged arrowheads, two flint knives and two beakers of Clarke's Developed Northern (N2) group. A rich female grave found in 1979 contained two gilt-bronze oval brooches, forty-four glass beads, a bone comb, an iron knife, whetstone, bone needle case and needles, iron sickle, bronze ringed pin, bronze buckle and strap-end, iron rivet and textile fragments.
