The Origins of Domestic Horses in North-west Europe
This paper presents direct radiocarbon measurements on horse skeletal remains from the Beaker period settlement at the site of Newgrange in Ireland, finds which have previously been argued as the earliest domestic horses in Ireland. The new determinations date the horse remains to the Irish Iron Age and shed important new light on the introduction of domestic horses to Ireland and to north-west Europe more generally. Bones and Eggs. The Archaeological Presence of the Grass Snake Natrix natrix (L.) in The Netherlands
In this paper we draw attention to numerous recent finds of bones and eggs of the grass snake Natrix natrix (L.) from the Netherlands. The presence of portions of the vertebral column without the skull suggests human use of the skin and meat. At least 13 sites dated between the late Iron Age and the Roman period have produced finds of one to 40 eggs. None of the eggs seem to have hatched. The selection of bird bones for artefact production at Dutch neolithic sites
The bird bones used for artefacts at the Dutch neolithic site of Aartswoud were from birds that were not represented among the food remains. Studies at other contemporary sites show that this was also the case at some other sites. The bones seem to have been selected from birds of particularly large size. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

A recent find of a European pond tortoise is presented in relation to former finds of Pleistocene and Holocene age from the Netherlands. The new find, with a 14C date of 5400±70 years BP, allows for a detailed study of the carapace, plastron and skeletal elements contained within the complete shell
