  • Early‐stage randomised controlled trial of therapist‐supported online cognitive therapy for post‐traumatic stress disorder in young people

Open Access•Patrick Smith, Anke Ehlers et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2025

BACKGROUND: Effective face-to-face treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are available, but most young people with PTSD do not receive effective treatment. Therapist-supported online Cognitive Therapy has the potential to improve accessibility of effective treatment. This early-stage trial gathered data on the feasibility, acceptability, and initial signal of clinical efficacy of a novel online Cognitive Therapy program for young p…

  • Cognitive appraisal as a mediator of the relations between war experiences and PTSD in the formerly abducted youth in Northern Uganda

Jane Namusoke, Nathaniel Mayengo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2025

Each trauma appraisal subscale partially mediated the association between war experiences and PTSD symptoms. The level of mediation by the various subscales of trauma appraisal was moderately large, suggesting that interventions targeted at changing maladaptive trauma cognitions may reduce the influence of war experiences on PTSD symptoms. • Characteristics of complex posttraumatic stress disorder ( PTSD ) in young people with PTSD following multiple trauma exposure

Open Access•Katie Lofthouse, Ella Beeson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2024

BACKGROUND: Complex PTSD (CPTSD) is a relatively new diagnosis. The objective of the present study was to investigate how trauma characteristics, comorbid psychopathology and cognitive and social factors experienced by children and adolescents with a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis following exposure to multiple traumatic events differs between those who meet the criteria for CPTSD and those who do not. METHOD: The present research…

  • The early course and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder in very young children

Open Access•Christopher Hitchcock, Benjamin Goodall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2022

BACKGROUND: The introduction of developmentally adapted criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has improved the identification of ≤6-year-old children with clinical needs. Across two studies, we assess predictors of the development of PTSD in young children (PTSD-YC), including the adult-led acute stress disorder (ASD) diagnosis, and provide proof of principle for cognitive-focused therapy for this age range, with the aim of increasing…

  • A longitudinal study of cognitive predictors of (complex) post‐traumatic stress in young people in out‐of‐home care

Open Access•Renata Hiller, Richard Meiser-Stedman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2021

BACKGROUND: Young people in out-of-home care are substantially more likely to meet criteria for PTSD than their peers, while their early maltreatment exposure may also place them at greater risk of developing the newly proposed complex PTSD. Yet, there remains limited empirical evidence for the mechanisms that might drive either PTSD or complex features in this group, and ongoing debate about the suitability of existing cognitive behavioural mode…

  • Prevalence and predictive value of ICD‐11 post‐traumatic stress disorder and Complex PTSD diagnoses in children and adolescents exposed to a single‐event trauma

Open Access•Rachel Elliott, Anna McKinnon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2021

BACKGROUND: The 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) made a number of significant changes to the diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We sought to determine the prevalence and 3-month predictive values of the new ICD-11 PTSD criteria relative to ICD-10 PTSD, in children and adolescents following a single traumatic event. ICD-11 also introduced a diagnosis of Complex PTSD (CPTSD), proposed…

  • Anxiety and depression in adults with autism spectrum disorder

Open Access•Matthew J Hollocks, Jian Wei Lerh et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Medicine•2019

Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are thought to be at disproportionate risk of developing mental health comorbidities, with anxiety and depression being considered most prominent amongst these. Yet, no systematic review has been carried out to date to examine rates of both anxiety and depression focusing specifically on adults with ASD. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the rates of anxiety and depression in adults with …

  • Sexual violence and general functioning among formerly abducted girls in Northern Uganda

Open Access•Kennedy Amone-P’olak, Tlholego Molemane Lekhutlile et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Thus, poor functioning among formerly abducted girls is largely mediated by stigma and poor community relations. However, due to the relatively small effect sizes of the associations, targeted interventions to prevent impaired functioning may have only modest benefits to the formerly abducted girls. Interventions to alleviate the toxic effects of sexual violence in formerly abducted girls would benefit from a holistic approach that targets stigma…

  • Screening for post-traumatic stress symptoms in looked after children

    Open Access•Lottie Morris, Paul M Salkovskis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children s Services•2015•Referências: 3

Purpose – Many children who are looked after by the state have experienced adverse and traumatic life circumstances prior to being removed from their biological parents. Previous research has highlighted that many of them experience barriers to accessing psychological therapies. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of assessing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms using a screening tool, and through this to d…

  • War experiences and psychotic symptoms among former child soldiers in Northern Uganda

Open Access•Kennedy Amone-P’olak, Balaam Nyeko Otim et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2015•Citada por: 1•Referências: 28

Psychotic symptoms have been associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and war experiences. However, the relationships between types of war experiences, the onset and course of psychotic symptoms, and post-war hardships in child soldiers have not been investigated. This study assessed whether various types of war experiences contribute to psychotic symptoms differently and whether post-war hardships mediated the relationship between war expe…

  • Postwar environment and long-term mental health problems in former child soldiers in Northern Uganda

    Kennedy Amone-P’olak, Jan Štochl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Citada por: 4•Referências: 30

BACKGROUND: War experiences (WE) and postwar environments (PWE) are associated with mental ill-health. The present study aims to investigate the pathways from WE and PWE to mental ill-health and to define opportunities for intervention through analysis of the war-affected youths study (WAYS) cohort study. METHOD: WAYS is an ongoing study of a large cohort of former child soldiers being conducted in Uganda. Mental health problems, subjective WE an…

  • The Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale (CRIES)

    Open Access•Sean Perrin, Richard Meiser-Stedman et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioural and Cognitive…•2005

The Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale (CRIES) is a brief child-friendly measure designed to screen children at risk for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It has good face and construct validity, a stable factor structure, correlates well with other indices of distress, and has been used to screen very large samples of at-risk-children following a wide range of traumatic events. However, few studies have examined the scale's validity ag…
