Development & Evaluation of a Teaching Assistant Institute to Build Near-Peer Teaching Capacity in Delivering Inclusive Public Health Education
Increasing Student Engagement in Quantitative Public Health Coursework Through Tailored Nudges
Student engagement predicts favorable educational outcomes. Nudges are increasingly applied to higher education contexts to promote engagement. A randomized study in a large quantitative analysis public health course deployed nudges catered to students’ intrinsic motivations. Participants ( n = 127) self-selected into motivation groups (Learners [ n = 46], Doers [ n = 48], or Performers [ n = 33]); half were randomized to receive four nudges tail…

Fighting Oppression, Racism and White Supremacy through Action, Research and Discourse (FORWARD) was founded to accelerate antiracist work at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. Seven action corps reporting to an accountability cabinet were established with 183 participants. FORWARD achieved progress acr…

Association Between Symptoms of Depression and Contraceptive Method Choices Among Low-Income Women at Urban Reproductive Health Centers
Maternal Obesity and Diabetes as Risk Factors for Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes
Objectives. We examined associations between obesity, diabetes, and 3 adverse pregnancy outcomes—primary cesarean delivery, preterm birth, and low birth-weight (LBW)—by racial/ethnic group. Our goal was to better understand how these associations differentially impact birth outcomes by group in order to develop more focused interventions. Methods. Data were collected from the 1999, 2000, and 2001 New York City birth files for 329988 singleton bir…

The estimated frequency of cosmetic breast augmentation among US women, 1963 through 1988
Estimates ranging from 1 to 2 million have been used to describe the number of women in the United States who have had cosmetic breast implants. Original data from a historical cohort study of women with breast augmentation were combined with simulation techniques to compute new estimates grounded on a more objective set of information and assumptions than previous attempts. It was estimated that the number of women who had cosmetic augmentation …
