  • Prior-Year Substance Use Disorders and Subsequent HIV Retention in Care Among Men Living with HIV Who Have Sex with Men

Open Access•Syeda Shehirbano Akhtar, Pieter Baker et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2026

Substance use disorders (SUDs) and polysubstance use (defined as co-occurring SUDs involving two or more substances), precursors for high-risk behaviors among key populations like men who have sex with men (MSM), may significantly impede optimal engagement in the HIV care continuum. Leveraging 14 years of Electronic Health Record (EHR) data (2006–2020) from a retrospective population-based cohort in South Carolina, we fitted logistic GLMMs with p…

  • An experimental investigation of federal messaging on public support for enforcement- and treatment-based approaches for opioid overdose prevention in South Carolina

    Open Access•Lídia Gual-Gonzalez, Hunter M Boehme et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Justice•2025

BACKGROUND: As the opioid overdose crisis continues to produce excessive morbidity and mortality in the United States, government agencies have applied various approaches to prevent overdoses, including law-enforcement efforts (e.g., arresting people who use drugs, interrupting drug traffickers, etc.) and treatment-based approaches (e.g., naloxone, medications for opioid use disorder, etc.). Public perception and support of these approaches are r…

  • Impact of SHIELD Police Training on Knowledge of Syringe Possession Laws and Related Arrests in Tijuana, Mexico

Pieter Baker, Leo Beletsky et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•Referências: 10

Between 2015 and 2018, we provided training for 1806 municipal police officers in Tijuana, Mexico, in an effort to improve their knowledge and behaviors related to HIV and injection drug use. Correct knowledge of syringe possession laws improved from 56% before training to 94% after training and was sustained at 24 months (75%). Knowledge improvement was associated with decreases in arrests for syringe possession over time (adjusted odds ratio [A…

  • Interactive Versus Video-Based Training of Police to Communicate Syringe Legality to People Who Inject Drugs

Jaime Arredondo, Leo Beletsky et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 26

Objectives. To assess how instructional techniques affect officers’ intent to communicate syringe legality during searches in Tijuana, Mexico, where pervasive syringe confiscation potentiates risk of HIV and HCV among people who inject drugs (PWID) and of occupational needle-stick injury among police. Methods. Using the SHIELD (Safety and Health Integration in the Enforcement of Laws on Drugs) model, Tijuana police underwent training to encourage…

  • Factors associated with extrajudicial arrest for syringe possession

Open Access•Mario Morales, Claudia Rafful et al.•ARTICLE•BMC International Health and…•2018

BACKGROUND: Mexican law permits syringe purchase and possession without prescription. Nonetheless, people who inject drugs (PWID) frequently report arrest for syringe possession. Extrajudicial arrests not only violate human rights, but also significantly increase the risk of blood-borne infection transmission and other health harms among PWID and police personnel. To better understand how police practices contribute to the PWID risk environment, …
