  • Embedding risk monitoring in infectious disease surveillance for timely and effective outbreak prevention and control

Open Access•Brecht Ingelbeen, Esther van Kleef et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

Epidemic intelligence efforts aim to predict, timely detect and assess (re-)emerging pathogens, guide and evaluate infectious disease prevention or control. We emphasise the underused potential of integrating the monitoring of risks related to exposure, disease or death, particularly in settings where limited diagnostic capacity and access to healthcare hamper timely prevention/control measures. Monitoring One Health exposures, human behaviour, i…

  • Dynamics in ownership, access and use of long-lasting insecticidal nets in Togo

Open Access•Gountante Kombate, M’belou Mazimna et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Malaria remains a major public health problem in many countries in Sub Saharan Africa, including Togo, particularly among children under 5 years of age. Therefore, several mass distribution campaigns of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs), which constitute an essential preventive strategy, have been conducted. The aim of this study is to assess progress in terms of equity of ownership, access and use of LLINs in a context of univers…

  • Geospatial and multilevel clustering of zero-dose children in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2022

Open Access•Armand Malembe Mutwadi, Joule Ntwan Madinga et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Zero-dose children remain highly vulnerable to vaccine-preventable diseases and can sustain transmission even in highly vaccinated populations. The WHO Immunization Agenda 2030 has prioritised reaching out to these children. We assessed the spatial distribution of zero-dose children together with the associated risk factors in a provincial capital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A cross sectional survey was conducted in the city of Kikwit be…

  • Mild and moderate Covid-19 during Alpha, Delta and Omicron pandemic waves in urban Maputo, Mozambique, December 2020-March 2022

Open Access•Brecht Ingelbeen, Victoria Cumbane et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

In sub-Saharan Africa, reported COVID-19 numbers have been lower than anticipated, even when considering populations’ younger age. The extent to which risk factors, established in industrialised countries, impact the risk of infection and of disease in populations in sub-Saharan Africa, remains unclear. We estimated the incidence of mild and moderate COVID-19 in urban Mozambique and analysed factors associated with infection and disease in a popu…

  • Outbreak of cholera in the Southwest region of Cameroon, 2021-22

Open Access•Eugene Bangwen, Jane‐Francis Tatah Kihla Akoachere et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

We report the largest cholera outbreak in the Southwest region. Our findings suggest the cross-border spread of cases from the Nigerian outbreak, likely driven by overcrowding in major cities. Our study highlights the need for cross-border surveillance, especially during humanitarian crises

  • Causes of death in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected children aged under-five years in western Kenya

Dickens O Onyango, Mercè de Febrer et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS•2022

Nearly all HIV-infected decedents' underlying cause of death was HIV disease, which was associated with malnutrition. Our findings underscore the need for strengthening early identification and management of HIV-infected children. Prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of malnutrition could be instrumental in improving the survival of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected children.

  • Care-seeking behaviour among febrile children under five in Togo

Open Access•Gountante Kombate, Gbènonminvo Enoch Cakpo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Interventions should specifically target women with limited education, not identifying as part of an official church and at longer distance from health center

  • Changes in (risk) behavior and HPV knowledge among Dutch girls eligible for HPV vaccination

Open Access•Robine Donken, Adriana Tami et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Overall, we did not find indications that vaccination influenced sexual behavior in girls during 2 years of follow-up. The few differences found may be related to existing disparities in the socio-demographic characteristics of the young population pointing to the importance and improvement of education with regard to safe sex practices. Our findings do not suggest that vaccination status is associated with changes in sexual risk behavior and thu…

  • Comparing national infectious disease surveillance systems

Open Access•Willemijn L Vlieg, Ewout Fanoy et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Despite these differences, the main conclusion is that for the two infections studied, the early warning system in China and the Netherlands are remarkably similar considering their large differences in infectious disease history, population size and geographical setting. Our main recommendations are continued emphasis on international corporation that requires insight into national infectious disease surveillance systems, the usage of a One Heal…

  • A Web—Based Respondent Driven Sampling Pilot Targeting Young People at Risk for Chlamydia Trachomatis in Social and Sexual Networks with Testing

    Open Access•Kevin Theunissen, C J Hoebe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

The screening strategy is feasible for targeting the hidden social network. However, uptake among men and recruitment of sex-partners is low and RDS stopped early. Future studies are needed to explore the sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and impact of strategies that target people at risk who are not effectively reached by regular health care

  • Equity in human papilloma virus vaccination uptake

Open Access•Madelief Mollers, Karin Lubbers et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

HPV vaccine uptake was not associated with knowledge of HPV and with factors that are known to be associated with non-attendance to the cervical cancer screening program in the Netherlands. Furthermore, most sexual behaviour was not related to vaccination status meaning that teenage unvaccinated girls were not at a disproportionally higher risk of being exposed to HPV. Routine HPV vaccination may reduce the social inequity of prevention of cervic…

  • Using intervention mapping for the development of a targeted secure web-based outreach strategy named SafeFriend, for Chlamydia trachomatis testing in young people at risk

Open Access•Kevin Theunissen, Kevin ATM Theunissen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

IM proved useful to develop an intervention for targeted Ct testing among young people. We believe this to be the first web-based outreach screening strategy which combines chain referral sampling with the delivery of targeted Ct testing to high risk young people within their sexual and social networks

  • Case-based reported mortality associated with laboratory-confirmed influenza A(H1N1) 2009 virus infection in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Rianne AB van Gageldonk-Lafeber, Rob M Riesmeijer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The mortality pattern in the 2010-2011 influenza season still resembled the 2009-2010 pandemic season with a peak in relatively young age groups, but concurrently a clear shift toward seasonal patterns was seen, with a peak in mortality in the elderly, i.e. ≥ 75 years of age

  • Detection of Excess Influenza Severity

Cees C van den Wijngaard, Liselotte van Asten et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Referências: 25

Objectives. We explored whether excesses in influenza severity can be detected by combining respiratory syndromic hospital and mortality data with data on influenza-like illness (ILI) cases obtained from general practitioners. Methods. To identify excesses in the severity of influenza infections in the population of the Netherlands between 1999 and 2005, we looked for increases in influenza-associated hospitalizations and mortality that were disp…

  • Use of surface water in drinking water production associated with municipal Legionnaires’ disease incidence

    Jeroen W Den Boer, R A Coutinho et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•Citada por: 2•Referências: 21

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Given an observed geographical variation in Legionnaires' disease incidence in The Netherlands, the aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that the type of drinking water production was an independent determinant of the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. DESIGN: For the 1987-2005 period, the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in The Netherlands and the price of water as a proxy for production type was studied at the munici…

  • A template for improved prevention and control of cardiovascular disease in sub-Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Marianne A B van der Sande, M A van der Sande•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2001

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is rapidly becoming an important public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa, yet the response so far is often minimal and inadequate. While there is, undoubtedly, a 'double burden of disease' (persisting infectious diseases co-existing with emerging non-communicable disease), this is hardly reflected in current health planning, possibly due to a limited appreciation of the changing pattern of CVD and CVD risk factor …

  • Obesity and Undernutrition and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Rural and Urban Gambian Communities

Marianne A B van der Sande, Sana M Ceesay et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2001•Referências: 14

Objectives. This study documented the prevalence of and cardiovascular risk factors associated with obesity and undernutrition in the Gambia. Methods. Adults (≥15 years; N = 5373) from rural and urban areas completed a questionnaire; their height, weight, and waist and hip circumferences were measured, and their cardiovascular risk factors were assessed. Results. Prevalence of undernutrition (body mass index 2 ) was 18.0%; all strata of society w…
