Effect of CDC adjustment of state‐reported data on community water fluoridation statistics
Adjustment of state-reported data improved overall quality of CWF coverage measures and had minimal impact on key measures
Impact of Making Dental Care Affordable on Quality of Life in Adults Aged 45 Years and Older
Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the associations between self-reported ability to afford dental care and quality of life in adults aged 45 years and older. Method: We used publicly available cross-sectional data from the 2008 National Health Interview Survey and its oral health supplement for 11,760 adults aged 45+ years. The increased probabilities of reporting dental problems attributable to an inability to afford dental c…
Estimating the cost of school sealant programs with minimal data
This methodology allows SSPs to estimate costs with minimal data collection and time
The effect of health and dental insurance on US children's dental care utilization for urgent and non‐urgent dental problems ‐ 2008
Expansion of Medicaid/SCHIP may permit children to receive care for urgent DPs who otherwise may not, due to lack of dental insurance
Perceived safety and benefit of community water fluoridation
Although only a minority of the US population perceived CWF as unsafe or providing no benefit to health, perceptions regarding CWF varied by knowledge of CWF and socio-demographic factors. Oral health promotion activities should consider these differing perceptions of CWF among groups to tailor oral health messaging appropriately
Calculating averted caries attributable to school‐based sealant programs with a minimal data set
With Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA, USA) spreadsheets available upon request, SBSP can use this methodology to generate reasonable estimates of their impact with a minimal data set
Burden of Oral Disease Among Older Adults and Implications for Public Health Priorities
Dental disease is largely preventable. Many older adults, however, experience poor oral health. National data for older adults show racial/ethnic and income disparities in untreated dental disease and oral health–related quality of life. Persons reporting poor versus good health also report lower oral health–related quality of life. On the basis of these findings, suggested public health priorities include better integrating oral health into medi…
Griffin et al. Respond
We appreciate Silk's comments, which bring further attention to the burden of oral disease among older adults. Our findings suggest that poor oral health can further diminish the well being of persons with existing health conditions through increased mouth pain, food avoidance, self-consciousness and embarrassment, and less satisfaction with life. Moreover, disparities in the burden of oral disease also exist based on race, ethnicity, and socioec…
Estimating Prevalence and Severity of Caries in the Mixed Dentition
Both SAFE and SENTINEL could serve as surveillance tools, depending on the system's purpose/objectives. However, it is unlikely that SAFE would provide adequate information to evaluate sealant programs
An Economic Evaluation of Community Water Fluoridation
On the basis of the most current data available on the effectiveness and cost of fluoridation, caries increment, and the cost and longevity of dental restorations, we find that water fluoridation offers significant cost savings
Dental Services, Costs, and Factors Associated with Hospitalization for Medicaid‐eligible Children, Louisiana 1996–97
Reducing severe caries through early interventions could provide substantial cost savings
