  • Misreporting Weight and Height Among Mexican and Puerto Rican Men

Open Access•Laura Aylward, Kristin L Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Men s Health•2021

Most obesity prevalence data rely on self-report, which typically differs when compared to objectively measured height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Given that Latino men have high rates of obesity in the United States and demonstrate greater misreporting compared to Caucasian men, examining the factors that contribute to misreporting among Latino men is warranted. This study examined BMI, Latino ethnic background (Mexican or Puerto Rican),…

  • Social Media as a Tool to Increase the Impact of Public Health Research

  • The home environment and childhood obesity in low-income households

    Open Access•Bradley M Appelhans, Stephanie L Fitzpatrick et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

This study adds to the existing literature by identifying aspects of the home environment that influence childhood weight status via indirect effects on screen time and sleep duration in children from low-income households. Pediatric weight management interventions for low-income households may be improved by targeting aspects of the physical and social home environment associated with sleep

  • Weight Loss Motivations

Stephenie C Lemon, Kristin L Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2014

Findings can inform targeted weight loss interventions

  • Food preparation supplies predict children’s family meal and home-prepared dinner consumption in low-income households

  • Can Attention Control Conditions Have Detrimental Effects on Behavioral Medicine Randomized Trials

Sherry Pagoto, Sherry L Pagoto et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2013

OBJECTIVE: Attention control (AC) conditions are used to balance nonspecific attention in randomized trials of behavioral interventions. Very little guidance about which behavioral interventions and outcomes merit AC is available in the literature. The primary aim of the present study is to demonstrate a scenario in which use of AC in a behavioral randomized trial was unnecessary and possibly detrimental. METHODS: Exploratory analyses were perfor…

  • Racial/ethnic disparities in association between dietary quality and incident diabetes in postmenopausal women in the United States

Yongxia Qiao, Lesley Tinker et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

These findings support a protective role of healthful eating choices in reducing the risk of developing diabetes, after adjusting for other lifestyle factors, in White and Hispanic postmenopausal women. Future studies are needed to investigate the relationship between dietary quality and risk of diabetes among Blacks and Asians in relationship to other lifestyle factors

  • Relations of Depressive Symptoms and Antidepressant Use to Body Mass Index and Selected Biomarkers for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease

Yunsheng Ma, Raji Balasubramanian et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 60

Objectives. We investigated whether depressive symptoms and antidepressant use are associated with biomarkers for glucose dysregulation and inflammation, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. Methods. Postmenopausal women were recruited into the Women’s Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998, and data were collected at regular intervals through 2005. We used multiple linear regression models to examine whether depressive symptoms and antid…

Stephenie C Lemon, Qin Liu et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2012

The weight-loss and eating norms surveys are reliable, valid measures

  • The emotional eating scale. Can a self-report measure predict observed emotional eating

  • Inhibiting Food Reward

Open Access•Bradley M Appelhans, Kathleen Woolf et al.•ARTICLE•Obesity•2011

Overeating is believed to result when the appetitive motivation to consume palatable food exceeds an individual's capacity for inhibitory control of eating. This hypothesis was supported in recent studies involving predominantly normal weight women, but has not been tested in obese populations. The current study tested the interaction between food reward sensitivity and inhibitory control in predicting palatable food intake among energy‐replete o…
