  • The Mediating Effect of E-Cigarette Harm Perception in the Relationship between E-Cigarette Advertising Exposure and E-Cigarette Use

Open Access•Nan Jiang, Shu Xu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Exposure to e-cigarette advertising is associated with e-cigarette use among young people. This study examined the mediating effect of e-cigarette harm perception on the above relationship. Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 2112 college students in New York City in 2017-2018. The analytic sample comprised 2078 participants (58.6% females) who provided completed data. Structural equal modeling was performed to examine if e-cigarette …

  • Air Pollution in American Indian Versus Non–American Indian Communities, 2000–2018

Maggie Li, Markus Hilpert et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 28

Objectives. To compare fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) concentrations in American Indian (AI)-populated with those in non–AI-populated counties over time (2000–2018) in the contiguous United States. Methods. We used a multicriteria approach to classify counties as AI- or non--AI-populated. We ran linear mixed effects models to estimate the difference in countywide annual PM 2.5 concentrations from well-validated prediction models and monitoring…

  • Effects of electronic cigarettes and hookah (waterpipe) use on home air quality

Jenni A Shearston, James Eazor et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2021

Use of e-cigarettes or hookah increases air pollution in homes. For hookah, increases in PM 2.5 penetrated even into rooms adjacent to where smoking occurs. Extending smoke-free rules inside homes to include e-cigarette and hookah products is needed to protect household members and visitors from passive exposure to harmful aerosols and gases

  • Opening a Large Delivery Service Warehouse in the South Bronx

    Open Access•Jenni A Shearston, A Mychal Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Mott Haven, a low-income neighborhood in New York City, suffers from increased air pollution and accommodates several industrial facilities and interstates. In 2018, a large delivery service warehouse opened. Our objectives are to characterize black carbon (BC), fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), and noise in the community; model changes in traffic due to the facility opening; and estimate associated BC and noise changes. BC, PM 2.5 , and noise w…

  • Nonmedical Opioid Use in Relation to Recency of Heroin Use in a Nationally Representative Sample of Adults in the United States

    Joseph J Palamar, Jenni A Shearston•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2017

Nonmedical opioid use has been linked to lifetime heroin use; however, research is needed to examine associations between nonmedical opioid use and current or recent heroin use, as current users appear to be at highest risk for harm. Data were from a nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized adults (age 18-64) in households participating in the National Survey of Drug Use and Health who reported lifetime heroin use (2005-2014, N =…

  • Effects of hookah smoking on indoor air quality in homes

Michael Weitzman, Afzalhussein Yusufali et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2016

This study, the first of its kind, demonstrates potentially hazardous levels of home air pollution in rooms where hookahs are being smoked as well as in adjacent rooms. These levels were greater than those in cigarette smoking homes, raising concerns about potential negative health effects on all individuals living in homes where hookahs are smoked

  • Gasoline Vapor Emissions During Vehicle Refueling Events in a Vehicle Fleet Saturated With Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery Systems

    Jenni A Shearston, Markus Hilpert

Background: Gasoline contains large proportions of harmful chemicals, which can be released during vehicle refueling. Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) can reduce these emissions, but there is limited research on the system’s efficacy over time in an actual vehicle fleet. The aims of this study are: (1) determine the feasibility of using an infrared camera to view vapor emissions from refueling; (2) examine the magnitude of refueling-relate…
