Increasing Hepatitis C Prevalence and Associated Risk Behaviors among Incarcerated Young Adults
Physicians’ Knowledge of and Willingness to Prescribe Naloxone to Reverse Accidental Opiate Overdose
Attitudes of police officers towards syringe access, occupational needle-sticks, and drug use
A Missed Opportunity
In 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued recommendations to screen all inmates with a history of injection drug use or other risk factors for hepatitis C. We compared self-reported risk factors for hepatitis C with serostatus from inmates in the Rhode Island Department of Corrections. Of the male inmates who were hepatitis C positive, 66% did not report injection drug use. Risk-based testing underestimates the hepatitis C vi…
Prevalence and Incidence of HIV, Hepatitis B Virus, and Hepatitis C Virus Infections Among Males in Rhode Island Prisons
Objectives. We evaluated prevalence and intraprison incidence of HIV, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus infections among male prison inmates. Methods. We observed intake prevalence for 4269 sentenced inmates at the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institute between 1998 and 2000 and incidence among 446 continuously incarcerated inmates (incarcerated for 12 months or more). Results. HIV, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus prevalences w…
Risk Behaviors by Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interviews among HIV-Seropositive and HIV-Seronegative Injection Drug Users
Audio computer assisted self-interview (ACASI) has been shown to elicit significantly higher reports of sensitive HIV risk behaviors compared with interviewer-administered questionnaires (IAQ). Injection drug users were randomized to either ACASI (n = 556) or IAQ (n = 586) in order to evaluate reporting differences. A significant interaction was found between mode of administration (ACASI/IAQ) and HIV status. HIV-seropositive respondents on ACASI…
