  • Profile of Mothers of Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Open Access•Svetlana Popova, Shannon Lange et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Population-based preventive interventions, including repeated screening, monitoring, and education regarding the effects of alcohol use, as well as other substances, before and during pregnancy, are needed to eliminate risk for FASD and other negative consequences on child and maternal health

  • The global proportion and volume of unrecorded alcohol in 2015

Open Access•Charlotte Probst, Alexandra Fleischmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2019

BACKGROUND: (APC) consumption among adults which comprises recorded consumption and unrecorded consumption. While recorded consumption can be assessed with small measurement bias via taxation or other governmental records, unrecorded consumption is more difficult to assess. The objectives of this study were to estimate the country-specific proportion and volume of unrecorded APC in 2015, to identify main sources of unrecorded alcohol and to asses…

  • Population-based prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in Canada

Open Access•Svetlana Popova, Shannon Lange et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

This study provides the first population-based estimate of the prevalence of FASD in Canada. The estimate is approximately double or possibly even triple previous crude estimates. FASD prevalence exceeds that of other common birth defects such as Down's syndrome, spina bifida, trisomy 18, as well as autism spectrum disorder in Canada. More effective prevention strategies targeting alcohol use during pregnancy, surveillance of FASD, and timely int…

  • Including gaming disorder in the ICD-11: The need to do so from a clinical and public health perspective

Open Access•Hans‐jürgen Rumpf, Sophia Achab et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Addictions•2018

The proposed introduction of gaming disorder (GD) in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) has led to a lively debate over the past year. Besides the broad support for the decision in the academic press, a recent publication by van Rooij et al. (2018) repeated the criticism raised against the inclusion of GD in ICD-11 by Aarseth et al. (2017). We argue that this…

  • Gaming disorder

    Open Access•Jennifer B Saunders, John B Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Addictions•2017

Online gaming has greatly increased in popularity in recent years, and with this has come a multiplicity of problems due to excessive involvement in gaming. Gaming disorder, both online and offline, has been defined for the first time in the draft of 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). National surveys have shown prevalence rates of gaming disorder/addiction of 10%-15% among young people in several Asian countr…

  • The relation between different dimensions of alcohol consumption and burden of disease

Open Access•Jurgen Rehm, Dolly Baliunas et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction•2010

Aims As part of a larger study to estimate the global burden of disease and injury attributable to alcohol: to evaluate the evidence for a causal impact of average volume of alcohol consumption and pattern of drinking on diseases and injuries; to quantify relationships identified as causal based on published meta‐analyses; to separate the impact on mortality versus morbidity where possible; and to assess the impact of the quality of alcohol on bu…

  • Validation of the alcohol, smoking and substance involvement screening test (Assist)

Open Access•Rachel Humeniuk, Robert L Ali et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction•2008

Aim The concurrent, construct and discriminative validity of the World Health Organization's Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) were examined in a multi‐site international study. Participants One thousand and 47 participants, recruited from drug treatment ( n = 350) and primary health care (PHC) settings ( n = 697), were administered a battery of instruments. Measurements Measures included the ASSIST; the Addiction…

  • Psychoactive Substance Use among Young People

Open Access•Mwansa Nkowane, Lee Da Rocha Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2008

This article presents core findings of a pre-intervention survey of psychoactive substance use in two communities in the Republic of Belarus and three communities in the Russian Federation between December 2000 and March 2001. The survey was part of the Global Initiative for the primary prevention of psychoactive substance use among young people in eight countries, initiated by the United Nations International Drug Control Program and the World H…

  • HIV risk behaviors among female IDUs in developing and transitional countries

    Open Access•Charles M Cleland, Don C Des Jarlais et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

Gender differences in risk depend on the relational contexts in which risk behaviors occur. The fact that female and male risk behavior often occurs in different relational contexts suggests that different kinds of prevention interventions which are sensitive to these contexts may be necessary

  • Using standardized methods for research on HIV and injecting drug use in developing/transitional countries

    Open Access•Don C Des Jarlais, Theresa E Perlis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Rapid assessment proved invaluable in paving the way for the survey. Central coordination of data collection is crucial. While fully standardized methods may be a research ideal, local circumstances may require substantial adaptation of the methods to achieve meaningful local representation. Allowance for understanding of local context may increase rather than decrease the generalizability of the data

  • Rapid Assessment and Response Studies of Injection Drug Use

Gerry V Stimson, Chris Fitch et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Citada por: 4•Referências: 18

Objectives. We evaluated the World Health Organization’s rapid assessment and response (RAR) method of assessing injection drug use and its associated health problems, focusing on knowledge gain, capacity building, and whether RAR leads to the development of interventions reducing the health effects of injection drug use. Methods. Data were derived from RAR studies conducted in Beijing, China; Bogotá, Colombia; Greater Rosario, Argentina; Hanoi, …
