Randomized controlled trials cognitive interventions in children and adolescents from low-socioeconomic backgrounds
A standardized approach to measuring gender transparency in languages
Languages can express grammatical gender through different ortho-phonological regularities present in nouns (e.g., the cues "-o" and "-a" for the masculine and the feminine respectively in Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish). The term "gender transparency" was coined to describe these regularities (Bates et al., 1995). In gendered languages, we can hence distinguish between transparent nouns, i.e., those displaying form regularities; opaque nouns, i…
The influence of syntactic knowledge on reading comprehension varies as a function of oral vocabulary in Spanish‐speaking children
Background Reading comprehension is a complex process influenced by many factors. However, the abilities that are known to influence reading comprehension may not contribute equally for children with different levels of oral language. Aims Here we examined the relationship of two factors known to influence reading comprehension (morphology and syntax) in a group of children who varied in their levels of oral vocabulary. Method Two hundred seventy…
How Living in Vulnerable Conditions Undermines Cognitive Development
Low-socioeconomic backgrounds represent a risk factor for children's cognitive development and well-being. Evidence from many studies highlights that cognitive processes may be adversely affected by vulnerable contexts. The aim of this study was to determine if living in vulnerable conditions affects childhood cognitive development. To achieve this, we assessed the performance of a sample of 347 Guatemalan children and adolescents aged from 6 to …
Implicit learning of non-linguistic and linguistic regularities in children with dyslexia
Implicit Learning of Written Regularities and Its Relation to Literacy Acquisition in a Shallow Orthography
Group Therapy within the NHS I. We all Know about `Good Enough' But is it `Safe Enough
As group work supervisor in a UK National Health Service Psychotherapy Unit the author was faced with a serious disruption of setting. This paper is his attempt to tell that story. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of context and setting and what can happen if this is disrupted. A wider analysis of the current state of group therapy in the NHS is offered, some contemporary issues are discussed and future developments are explored
