Effects of Response Option Order on Likert-Type Psychometric Properties and Reactions
The effects of different response option orders on survey responses have been studied extensively. The typical research design involves examining the differences in response characteristics between conditions with the same item stems and response option orders that differ in valence—either incrementally arranged (e.g., strongly disagree to strongly agree) or decrementally arranged (e.g., strongly agree to strongly disagree). The present study add…
Economic Predictors of Differences in Interview Faking Between Countries
Many companies recruit employees from different parts of the globe, and faking behavior by potential employees is a ubiquitous phenomenon. It seems that applicants from some countries are more prone to faking compared to others, but the reasons for these differences are largely unexplored. This study relates country‐level economic variables to faking behavior in hiring processes. In a cross‐national study across 20 countries, participants ( N = 3…
International comparison of gender differences in the five-factor model of personality
Fully contextualized, frequency-based personality measurement
We compared the predictive validity of two types of Frame-of-Reference personality measures to each other and to a baseline generic measure. Each version of the measures used a unique response-format referred to as frequency-based estimation that allowed the behavioral consistency of responses to be gauged. Generic personality scales, tagged scales with “at school”, and completely modified scales were compared in their prediction of academic perf…
Effects of Perceived Selection Ratio on Personality Test Faking
Research has not investigated the degree to which perceived selection ratio may affect faking on personality inventories. In this study, two personality inventories that differed in item subtlety were administered to 150 undergraduate students. Half of the students were administered a personality inventory with more obvious items ( n = 75) and half of the students were administered a personality inventory with more subtle items ( n = 75). For eac…
Does batterers' treatment work? A meta-analytic review of domestic violence treatment
Perceptions of Ethical Behaviour among Business Faculty in Canada
The “Ethical” Professor and the Undergraduate Student
Revising the Jdi Work Satisfaction Subscale
The Job Descriptive Index (JDI) is a widely used facet measure of job satisfaction that has undergone several revisions since its first publication in 1969. A revision in 1985 added items that, in subsequent research, appeared to tap work stress rather than work satisfaction. To illuminate the contaminating effect of these items, the authors analyzed two samples ( n = 1,623 and n = 314) that also contained test items hypothesized to tap job contr…
Structural Equivalence of a Measure of Cross-Cultural Adjustment
This study investigated the structural equivalence of a measure of cross-cultural adjustment in culturally dissimilar samples using confirmatory factor analysis. The two samples consisted of 155 international students studying at a midwestern American university and 153 American expatriate managers on assignment in either Taiwan or Belgium. Results indicated that the hypothesized factor structure was invariant and had a relatively good fit in bot…
