  • Changes in the provision and utilisation of health care services for chronic health conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic in rural northeast South Africa

Open Access•Chodziwadziwa Kabudula, Chodziwadziwa W Kabudula et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the provision and utilisation of health care services with varying magnitude across settings due to spatial temporal variation in the burden of COVID-19 cases and the roll-out of local COVID-19 response policies. This study assesses changes in the provision and utilisation of health care services for three major chronic health conditions (HIV/AIDS, hypertension, and diabetes) over the pre-COVID-19 an…

  • Indirect effects of Covid-19 on maternal and child health in South Africa

Open Access•Evelyn Thsehla, Adam Balusik et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2023

BACKGROUND: The unfinished burden of poor maternal and child health contributes to the quadruple burden of disease in South Africa with the direct and indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic yet to be fully documented. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the indirect effects of COVID-19 on maternal and child health in different geographical regions and relative wealth quintiles. METHODS: We estimated the effects of COVID-19 on maternal and child health f…

  • Early predictors of sensory processing sensitivity in members of the Birth to Twenty Plus cohort

    Open Access•Andrew K May, Stephan H Wessels et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2023•Referências: 90

  • Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy in rural South Africa

Open Access•Kathleen Kahn, Audrey Pettifor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2022

Background: To date, COVID-19 vaccine coverage in the African region falls far too short of global goals. Increasing vaccination rates requires understanding barriers to vaccination so that effective interventions that sensitively and effectively address barriers to vaccination can be implemented. Methods: To assess COVID-19 vaccination levels and identify major barriers to vaccine uptake we conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey am…

  • Burden of mortality linked to community-nominated priorities in rural South Africa

Open Access•Pyry Mattila, Justine Ina Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2022

BACKGROUND: Community knowledge is a critical input for relevant health programmes and strategies. How community perceptions of risk reflect the burden of mortality is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine the burden of mortality reflecting community-nominated health risk factors in rural South Africa, where a complex health transition is underway. METHODS: Three discussion groups (total 48 participants) representing a cross-section of the c…

  • The impact of HIV status on the distance traveled to health facilities and adherence to care. A record-linkage study from rural South Africa

Open Access•Paul Mee, Brian Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2020

BACKGROUND: For people living with HIV (PLWH), the burden of travelling to a clinic outside of one's home community in order to reduce the level of stigma experienced, may impact adherence to treatment and accelerate disease progression. METHODS: This study is set in the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in South Africa. Probabilistic and interactive methods were used to individually link HDSS data with medical records. …

  • Enhancing the value of mortality data for health systems

    Open Access•Laith Hussain‐Alkhateeb, Laith Hussain-Alkhateeb et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2019

Half of the world's deaths and their causes pass unrecorded by routine registration systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Verbal autopsy (VA) collects information on medical signs, symptoms and circumstances from witnesses of a death that is used to assign likely medical causes. To further contextualise information on mortality, understanding underlying determinants, such as logistics, barriers to service utilisation and heal…

  • Genomic and environmental risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases in Africa

Open Access•Stuart A Ali, Cassandra Claire Soo et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

There is an alarming tide of cardiovascular and metabolic disease (CMD) sweeping across Africa. This may be a result of an increasingly urbanized lifestyle characterized by the growing consumption of processed and calorie-dense food, combined with physical inactivity and more sedentary behaviour. While the link between lifestyle and public health has been extensively studied in Caucasian and African American populations, few studies have been con…

  • Regional and sex-specific variation in BMI distribution in four sub-Saharan African countries

Open Access•Michèle Ramsay, Nigel J Crowther et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

BACKGROUND: African populations are characterised by diversity at many levels including: demographic history, genetic ancestry, language, wealth, socio-political landscape, culture and behaviour. Several of these have a profound impact on body fat mass. Obesity, a key risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, in the wake of the epidemiological and health transitions across the continent, requires detailed analysis together with other…

  • Initiating a participatory action research process in the Agincourt health and socio–demographic surveillance site

Open Access•Oghenebrume Wariri, Lucia D’ambruoso et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2017

BACKGROUND: Despite progressive health policy, disease burdens in South Africa remain patterned by deeply entrenched social inequalities. Accounting for the relationships between context, health and risk can provide important information for equitable service delivery. The aims of the research were to initiate a participatory research process with communities in a low income setting and produce evidence of practical relevance. METHODS: We initiat…

  • Community perspectives on HIV, violence and health surveillance in rural South Africa

Open Access•Nitya Hullur, Lucia D’ambruoso et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2016

BACKGROUND: South Africa faces a complex burden of disease consisting of infectious and non-communicable conditions, injury and interpersonal violence, and maternal and child mortality. Inequalities in income and opportunity push disease burdens towards vulnerable populations, a situation to which the health system struggles to respond. There is an urgent need for health planning to account for the needs of marginalized groups in this context. Th…

  • Completeness of birth and death registration in a rural area of South Africa

Open Access•Michel Garenne, Mark Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2016

BACKGROUND: Completeness of vital registration remains very low in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rural areas. OBJECTIVES: To investigate trends and factors in completeness of birth and death registration in Agincourt, a rural area of South Africa covering a population of about 110,000 persons, under demographic surveillance since 1992. The population belongs to the Shangaan ethnic group and hosts a sizeable community of Mozambican refugees. D…

  • Childhood adiposity trajectories are associated with late adolescent blood pressure

Open Access•Richard J Munthali, Juliana Kagura et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

We identified three (3) and four (4) distinct BMI trajectories in boys and girls, respectively. The overall prevalence of elevated blood pressure (BP) was 34.9 % (39.4 % in boys and 30.38 % in girls). Boys and girls in the early onset obesity or overweight BMI trajectories were more likely to have higher BP values in late adolescence. Compared to those in the normal weight BMI trajectory, girls in early onset obesity trajectories had an increased…

  • Evidence for localised HIV related micro–epidemics associated with the decentralised provision of antiretroviral treatment in rural South Africa

Open Access•Paul Mee, Mark Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2014

BACKGROUND: In this study we analysed the spatial and temporal changes in patterns of mortality over a period when antiretroviral therapy (ART) was rolled out in a rural region of north-eastern South Africa. Previous studies have identified localised concentrated HIV related sub-epidemics and recommended that micro-level analyses be carried out in order to direct focused interventions. METHODS: Data from an ongoing health and socio-demographic su…

  • Retracted

Open Access•Francesc Xavier Gómez-Olivé, Margaret Thorogood et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2013

BACKGROUND: South Africa is experiencing a demographic and epidemiological transition with an increase in population aged 50 years and older and rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases. This, coupled with high HIV and tuberculosis prevalence, puts an already weak health service under greater strain. OBJECTIVE: To measure self-reported chronic health conditions and chronic disease risk factors, including smoking and alcohol use, and to esta…

  • Convergence in fertility of South Africans and Mozambicans in rural South Africa, 1993–2009

Open Access•Jill Williams, Latifat Ibisomi et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2013

BACKGROUND: Although there are significant numbers of people displaced by war in Africa, very little is known about long-term changes in the fertility of refugees. Refugees of the Mozambican civil war (1977-1992) settled in many neighbouring countries, including South Africa. A large number of Mozambican refugees settled within the Agincourt sub-district, underpinned by a Health and Socio-demographic Surveillance Site (AHDSS), established in 1992…

  • Assessing a population's exposure to heat and humidity

Open Access•Peter Bya, Wayne Twine et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2010

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that assessing the impact of heat on populations is an important aspect of climate change research. However, this raises questions about how best to measure people's exposure to heat under everyday living conditions in more detail than is possible by relying on nearby sources of meteorological data. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate practical and viable approaches to measuring air temperature and humidit…
