Automated versus hybrid street network modelling for centrality and accessibility analysis
This study evaluates the extent to which fully automated street network modelling can reproduce the analytical outcomes of a hybrid (automated–manual) approach for centrality and accessibility analysis across four morphologically distinct cities: Nicosia, London, Gothenburg, and Madrid. Results show that the geometry-preserving segmentation logic of the automated workflow systematically increases network granularity relative to the continuity-mer…
From Research to Practice
Architectural, urban design, and planning practices are increasingly expected to demonstrate measurable impact, accountability, and responsiveness to complex environmental and social challenges. Evidence-based design (EBD) and research-informed design (RID), which ground design decisions in systematically gathered and critically evaluated knowledge, offer a structured pathway to bridge research and practice. Despite growing recognition, however, …
Youth engagement in urban living labs
Empowering youth in urban governance is essential to align immediate societal concerns with long-term sustainability. Urban living labs (ULLs) provide a valuable framework for embedding youth perspectives into urban decision-making by offering real-world settings for co-creation, experimentation and learning. They have also emerged as pedagogical tools within higher education institutions, yet their use in this context remains insufficiently expl…
Framing Evidence-Based Design and Planning
The increasing complexity of urban environments has exposed the limitations of prescriptive approaches in urban design and planning, highlighting the need for more adaptive, data-informed, and methodologically rigorous processes. Evidence-Based Design and Planning (EBDP) offers a promising response by embedding evidence as a continuous and iterative element throughout design and decision-making. Yet, its adoption in practice remains uneven, const…
Mapping Everyday Public Spaces in Urban Neighbourhoods
Central public spaces in cities have always played an important role in urban experience, and continue to have a city-wide significance, often described as the meeting spaces of cultures, politics, social and individual trajectories. Peripheral and/or neighbourhood public spaces, where the everyday life of citizens unfolds, rarely enjoy any of this significance and may not receive the attention needed from the main stakeholders involved. Many res…
Mapping Urban Injustices in Public Space
Over the past few decades, cities around the world radically and rapidly changed as regards scale, scope and complexity. This is mainly due to the increasing mobility of people, goods and information as a result of technological developments, liberalization of economic systems, economic fluctuations, wars, and climate change. These changes challenge the processes of production of built environment and create conflicts and contestations between di…
Spatial Forms of Ethnic Coexistence in Ottoman Cyprus
The rationale behind this article is an identified need for enhancing research on the relationship between the physical and the social aspects of the city of Nicosia through the lens of spatial history. Building on Baker’s categorizations of approaches to space in historical research and a syntactical, morphological approach to historical subjects, this article proposes an integrated methodology for researching historical space that may prove imp…
The study of urban form in Cyprus
The history of Cypriot cities, in particular the capital, Nicosia and the main historical port of Famagusta, has been the subject of a wide variety of publications. However, the study of their urban form is relatively recent and, until the establishment of architectural schools within Cypriot universities, it has been carried out within research establishments outside of Cyprus. Consequently, urban morphological research in Cyprus is highly influ…
