Bachelier (1914) and Mandelbrot (1963)
Benoît Mandelbrot’s argument in 1963 and later for the prevalence of fat-tailed distributions (“wild randomness”) was presented as a challenge to Louis Bachelier’s 1900 model of asset price movements as Brownian motion in efficient markets. There was, however, another side to Bachelier’s contribution, discovered and reported by Mandelbrot in 1967 but still not generally known. Bachelier (1914) was the first to show the crucial empirical weaknesse…
Irving Fisher on conservation, national vitality and economic progress
As a member of the National Conservation Commission appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt, Yale economist Irving Fisher wrote a 138-page Report on National Vitality, Its Wastes and Conservation, published in the commission's three volume report in January 1909 and separately as a bulletin of the Committee of One Hundred on National Health. This report provided the most thorough and analytical statement of Fisher's advocacy of increasing the l…
James Tobin on macroeconomic instability
From 1975 onwards, the American Keynesian monetary economist James Tobin changed his interpretation of the Keynesian case that active stabilisation policy is sometimes needed to restore full employment, offering a new interpretation that drew on Keynes’s General Theory (Chapter 19) and on Irving Fisher’s 1933 debt-deflation theory of depressions to argue that wage and price flexibility could be destabilizing. Tobin’s very first journal article in…
James Tobin on Overlapping Generations Models and the Microeconomic Foundations of Macroeconomics Reconsidered
The American Keynesian economist and Nobel laureate James Tobin entitled his contribution to the inaugural issue of Journal of Money, Credit and Banking “A General Equilibrium Approach to Monetary Theory” (1969) yet he was sharply critical of the version of general equilibrium analysis used in the now-prevalent dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) approach to macroeconomic modeling. He also rejected claims that overlapping generation (OL…
Introduction to Economists at War
The 2023 HOPE conference aimed to understand the interrelationships between the Second World War and economics. Examining this back-and-forth means examining the transformative effect of the war on the content and status of economics but also symmetrically examining the role played by economics and economists in the conduct of the Second World War
Koopmans, Dantzig, and the Wartime Origins of Activity Analysis
In the introduction to Activity Analysis of Production and Allocation (Cowles Monograph No. 13), Tjalling C. Koopmans recalled that he developed the model of his "Optimal Utilization of the Transportation System" (in the proceedings of 1947 International Statistical Congress, which were reissued as an Econometrica supplement, 1949) "under the stimulation of statistical work for the Combined Shipping Adjustment Board, the British-American board de…
Irving Fisher, Ragnar Frisch, and the Elusive Quest for Measurable Utility
Commitment to the behaviorist approach to utility theory, to the usefulness of mathematics in economic analysis, and to equalization of the marginal utility of income as a principle of just taxation brought Irving Fisher and Ragnar Frisch to attempt to measure the marginal utility of income and led them to collaborate in forming the Econometric Society and sponsoring the establishment of the Cowles Commission, institutions advancing economic theo…
The emergence of social choice at the Cowles Commission, 1948–1952
Kenneth Arrow’s Social Choice and Individual Values (Cowles Monograph No. 12, 1951), a work that established the field of social choice and set the limits for what public economic theory could hope to achieve, was formulated at the Cowles Commission at the University of Chicago from 1947 to 1949 (and during the summer of 1948 at the RAND Corporation) in a context in which concern with using economic theory to guide the economy was intense. During…
Irving Fisher, Simon Newcomb, and their plans to stabilize the dollar
Irving Fisher dedicated Stabilizing the Dollar (1920) to Simon Newcomb for anticipating him “in proposing plans for stabilizing monetary units.” The congruence of Newcomb’s and Fisher’s monetary theories and reform proposals was not as straightforward as Fisher’s book dedication suggested. Their plans had different theoretical roots: Fisher’s compensated dollar plan was the outcome of his quantity theory of money, while Newcomb held a classical m…
Lucas and Tobin
The future Nobel laureates Robert Lucas and James Tobin debated the New Classical challenge to the microeconomic foundations and empirical validity of Keynesian economics, with Lucas singling Tobin out as an interlocutor among Keynesian economists who took the New Classical challenge seriously. Their intellectual exchanges began with Tobin, ‘The Wage-Price Mechanism: Overview of the Conference’ (1972), and Lucas, ‘Econometric Testing of the Natur…
Economic Inequality and Rural Entrepreneurship
The relationship between economic inequality and entrepreneurship has received the attention of scholars who have advised researchers to ‘use new data and seek new methods to study economic inequality.’ We examine a neglected source of such data and methods, Polly Hill’s The Migrant Cocoa-Farmers of Southern Ghana (1963) and Studies in Rural Capitalism in West Africa (1970), which stressed the agency of rural entrepreneurs. According to Hill, eco…
The Emergence of Geographical Economics
We explore disciplinary boundary-making in geographical economics or “the new economic geography” with attention to the approaches taken by, and attempts at communication among, scholars with primary affiliations in economics, geography, and regional science. The Dixit-Stiglitz general equilibrium approach to monopolistic competition and increasing returns was applied to agglomeration and location by Paul Krugman, who had previously pioneered the…
Polly Hill
Polly Hill spent her long, productive, and at times controversial career crossing and contesting disciplinary boundaries. She graduated in economics at Cambridge, but her doctorate was in social anthropology—with economist Joan Robinson as dissertation supervisor. Her thirteen years at the University of Ghana were initially in economics, then in African studies, and her readership at Cambridge was in Commonwealth studies. As a woman in several ma…
From “science as measurement” to “measurement and theory”
While located at the University of Chicago, the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics advanced a distinctive “Cowles Commission approach” to macroeconomic modelling, using maximum likelihood methods to estimate structurally-identified Keynesian simultaneous-equations models, with the methods presented in two Cowles monographs edited or co-edited by Tjalling Koopmans, a pioneering implementation in another Cowles monograph by Lawrence Klein,…
Léon Walras, Irving Fisher and the Cowles Approach to General Equilibrium Analysis
This paper explores the relationship of Walras’s work to a particularly influential tradition of general equilibrium, that associated with the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics in Colorado in the 1930s and at the University of Chicago from 1939 to 1955, and its successor, the Cowles Foundation, at Yale University from 1955. Irving Fisher introduced general equilibrium analysis into North America with his 1891 Yale dissertation Mathemati…
Keynes, Knight, and Fundamental Uncertainty
John Maynard Keynes’s Treatise on Probability (1921) and Frank Knight’s Risk, Uncertainty and Profit (1921) independently stressed the distinction between insurable risk and uninsurable fundamental uncertainty (in Knight’s terminology), inspiring two literatures that have engaged with each other only intermittently. I explore the relationship between what Keynes wrote about uncertainty in his Treatise and what Knight published the same year, and …
Jacob Marschak and the Cowles approaches to the theory of money and assets
Jacob Marschak shaped the emergence of monetary theory and portfolio choice at the Cowles Commission (which he directed from 1943 to 1948, but with which he was involved already from 1937) at the University of Chicago, where he was the doctoral teacher of Leonid Hurwicz, Harry Markowitz and Don Patinkin, and then from 1955 at the Cowles Foundation at Yale University, where he was a senior colleague of James Tobin until moving to UCLA in 1960. Mar…

The Elgar Companion to John Maynard Keynes
There are three areas in which Kahn (1905–1989) made contributions which secured him a prominent place in the history of economics: imperfect competition, the theory of employment, and monetary and international economics.
Women in the Early Years of the American Economic Association
We use the archives of the American Economic Association to examine the participation of women in the association from its foundation in 1885 to the Great Depression. Women participated actively in the formation of the association, contributed several monographs to its early publications, and won some of its early essay competitions. We find that the membership drives of 1900-1902 (aimed at academics and businessmen) and of 1909-13 (aimed at lawy…

Populism versus Economic Expertise
William Harvey’s best-selling Coin’s Financial School made the bimetallist case for free coinage of silver through a fictitious debate in which leading bankers, politicians, and economists were humiliated by a young bimetallist. One of Harvey’s targets, J. Laurence Laughlin, challenged Harvey to a real debate, in which populist critique of established authority was confronted with an emphatic defense of monetary orthodoxy and academic expertise b…

Economists and the Shadow of "The Other" Before 1914
This paper examines how economists from David Hume to Irving Fisher have struggled with the applicability of their analyses to those who differed from them in gender, ethnicity, class, or race. Particular attention is paid to how Fisher's discussion of racial and ethnic differences in capital accumulation and time preference changed between The Rate of Interest (1907) and The Theory of Interest (1930), and how it drew on earlier work by John Rae …

Don Patinkin (1993) and James Meade (1993) explore the relationship among Kahn's multiplier, ‘Mr Meade's Relation', and Keynes's theory of effective demand, but do not quote Mr Meade's Relation as it appeared in Kahn (1931). Perhaps I'm a Don Quixote but I'm Trying to Be a Paul Revere
The American economist Irving Fisher (1867-1947) combined his work as a scientific economist, addressed to his fellow economists, with sustained and vigorous participation in public discourse, trying to change public policy and to reform attitudes and behavior by teaching policymakers and the public what Fisher regarded as the lessons of economic science. Fisher's dissertation, on general equilibrium analysis, was removed from political debate, b…
Trevor Swan and the Neoclassical Growth Model
The independent contributions of Robert Solow and the Australian economist Trevor Swan in developing the neoclassical growth model are sometimes recognized by reference to the "Solow-Swan" model, but often reference is made only to the "Solow" model. Both Solow (1956) and Swan (1956) created a simple, convenient, and powerful apparatus for finding the steady-state growth path of a one-commodity world. This paper examines the differences and simil…

The first female economist to win a Nobel Prize was Emily Greene Balch, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for the same anti-war activism for which she lost her Wellesley professorship of economics and sociology in 1918.
