Workers using foodbanks’: The embedding of food insecurity at the nexus of welfare and employment laws
In this first UK study of ‘Workers using foodbanks’, 65 per cent of research participants, including 76 per cent of those of working age, identified poor-quality employment as the root cause of their food insecurity. This primary problem of the deficient quality of jobs was characterised by insecure work, low wages, and excessive mental stress. Data revealed an environment in which workers are required to claim benefits because available employme…
English Dubs: Why are Anglophone Viewers Receptive to English Dubbing on Streaming Platforms and to Foreign-Accent Strategies
Accents are often utilised in fictional audiovisual products to determine the creation of character identity. This is due to the set of cultural connotations typically associated with any given accent in any given language community. However, is there really one monolingual target audience anymore? In the age of streaming platforms, and at the rate the localisation industry is creating subtitles and revoiced versions, the target audience for many…
Role Reversal: An Overview of Audiovisual Translation into English
This article depicts the current state of the art of English-language audiovisual translation (AVT) and sheds light on the recent changes impacting media localisation practices, viewing patterns, and viewer agency. The motivations that have catapulted practices like subtitling and dubbing into English on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms are considered, and special emphasis is placed on the move from English-language content to the production and d…
How to sound Spanish in English: Questionnaire findings and implications for English-language original and dubbed fiction
In this article, I analyse the results of a questionnaire conducted in order to discern how to sound Spanish in English or, more precisely, how to be perceived as a native-Spanish speaker by native-English speakers. The study set out to determine the degree of specificity to which native-English speakers perceive foreign accents in English, in general, and Hispanic-accented English, in particular. The study also aimed to elucidate the key phoneti…
Bastard from the North or Kingg in th’ Nohrth?
In this chapter, I delve into accents as units of cultural transmission (i.e., “dialectal memes”) and their therefore inevitable role in fictional characterisations. To elucidate the concept of dialectal memes, the processes through which social values are indexed by linguistic variation, or enregistered, are explored from a sociolinguistic perspective. Concrete cases of dialectal memes are discussed, on the one hand, in relation to Northern and …
Objectifying Love: Ladies and Their Tokens, Saints and Their Relics in Chrétien de Troyes
Relics are powerful signifiers of the relationship between humanity and the divine because they allow humans to physically touch a part of a saint’s body or an extension of the saint’s body. This type of symbolism may also be found in the relationship between ladies and knights in Chrétien de Troyes’ Arthurian romances, when a part of the lady’s body (her hair, for example) or an object that once belonged to the lady is touched by the knight. The…
Good Reasons Why Adult Social Care Needs Sectoral Collective Bargaining
In this booklet, Dr Lydia Hayes sets out the lessons learned from her interdisciplinary research into the social care sector, and builds upon the recommendations made in the Institute of Employment Rights' Manifesto for Labour Law: a comprehensive revision of worker’s rights to propose a sectoral collective bargaining structure for the negotiation of wages and conditions.
The Sexual Contract 30 Years on: A Conversation with Carole Pateman
This reflection is based on a conversation with Professor Carole Pateman on 4th December 2017 as we prepared for a conference at Cardiff University to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of her seminal work, The Sexual Contract (1988). As socio-legal scholars, The Sexual Contract has been formative in, and transformative of, our understandings of law and gender. We explore Professor Pateman’s academic journey and consider how she came to write a …

Taking worker productivity to a new level? Electronic Monitoring in homecare—the (re)production of unpaid labour
This article explores the use of Electronic Monitoring ( EM ) in homecare and its impact on the ratio of paid to unpaid working time. It argues that whilst Zero Hours Contracts ( ZHC s) blur the distinction between paid and unpaid labour, the introduction of EM can formalise and regulate the demarcation between the two. In the context of local authority commissioning and constrained budgets, the combination of EM and ZHC 's may excise so‐called ‘…
Care in a Time of Austerity: The Electronic Monitoring of Homecare Workers’ Time
However, there has been little examination of the specific organisational mechanisms through which the value of paid carework is undermined Since 2010, the UK government has implemented an austerity programme which has severely reduced state spending on public services. In this context, employers in the homecare sector have introduced telephone-based technology to monitor working time and support local authority commissioning of homecare from (ma…
