A moment of rupture and regime destablisation
In October 2021 the Norwegian Supreme Court ruled that two wind farms built on the Fosen peninsula, mid-Norway, interfered with the Sámi reindeer herders right to enjoy their own culture and hence the decisions to grant planning concessions were invalid. We interpret this ruling as a moment of rupture, with potential to destabilise the sociotechnical regime. In this article, we seek to explain this moment of rupture and the prevailing, of sorts, …
Norwegian low-intensity ovine and bovine farming systems—a resilience perspective
The concept of socio-ecological resilience can be used to understand and measure to what degree farming systems are able to handle and adapt to disturbances. The article is based on the application of a framework for resilience assessment in European farming systems to the Norwegian low-intensity ovine and bovine farming systems. The aim is to identify the characteristics of farming systems and important trends in them. Interviews held at county …
Management of rented farmland in Norway
Renting agricultural land is a common practice in many countries. The possibility to rent land provides farmers with increased flexibility in terms of production volume. Land renting may have various effects on farmland management; however, results from studies analysing these are ambivalent. Farmland in the best possible state is a prerequisite for following up ambitions of feeding a growing population through a sustainable agriculture. Decision…
Climate change adaptation processes seen through a resilience lens
Climate change and more frequent extreme weather events are expected to significantly challenge food production and food security worldwide, underlining the need for adaptation within the agricultural sector. Although Norway, as other Nordic countries, potentially benefits from higher temperatures in terms of agricultural production, adaptation will be necessary. Employing resilience as a theoretical lens, this study investigates Norwegian farmer…
Spatio-temporal patterns of birch regrowth in a Western Norwegian treeline ecotone
The study investigates spatio-temporal patterns of birch regrowth in a mountain valley in which intensive livestock grazing was formerly practised. Vegetation changes were identified through analysis of three sets of aerial photographs. The results of GIS analyses, one-way ANOVA and PCA showed that regrowth patterns are complex. In the early phase of succession, grazing history has a strong impact on where new forest establishes, both at a distan…
