The Cost-Effectiveness of the SMART Work & Life Intervention for Reducing Sitting Time
Sedentary behaviours continue to increase and are associated with heightened risks of morbidity and mortality. We assessed the cost-effectiveness of SMART Work & Life (SWAL), an intervention designed to reduce sitting time inside and outside of work, both with (SWAL-desk) and without (SWAL-only) a height-adjustable workstation compared to usual practice (control) for UK office workers. Health outcomes were assessed in quality-adjusted life-years …
Drivers with and without Obesity Respond Differently to a Multi-Component Health Intervention in Heavy Goods Vehicle Drivers
Physical inactivity and obesity are widely prevalent in Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers. We analysed whether obesity classification influenced the effectiveness of a bespoke structured lifestyle intervention ('SHIFT') for HGV drivers. The SHIFT programme was evaluated within a cluster randomised controlled trial, across 25 transport depots in the UK. After baseline assessments, participants within intervention sites received a 6-month multi-com…
Views of the public about SnacktivityTM
The SnacktivityTM approach to promoting physical activity was viewed positively by the public and interventions to test the merits of such an approach now need to be developed and tested in a variety of everyday contexts
Monitoring sociodemographic inequality in Covid-19 vaccination uptake in England
BACKGROUND: The UK began an ambitious COVID-19 vaccination programme on 8 December 2020. This study describes variation in vaccination uptake by sociodemographic characteristics between December 2020 and August 2021. METHODS: Using population-level administrative records linked to the 2011 Census, we estimated monthly first dose vaccination rates by age group and sociodemographic characteristics among adults aged 18 years or over in England. We a…
Modelling the Reallocation of Time Spent Sitting into Physical Activity
Isotemporal substitution modelling (ISM) and compositional isotemporal modelling (CISM) are statistical approaches used in epidemiology to model the associations of replacing time in one physical behaviour with time in another. This study's aim was to use both ISM and CISM to examine and compare associations of reallocating 60 min of sitting into standing or stepping with markers of cardiometabolic health. Cross-sectional data collected during th…
Association of working shifts, inside and outside of healthcare, with severe Covid−19
Both health and shift work (measured at baseline, 2006-2010) were independently associated with over twice the odds of severe COVID-19 in 2020; the odds were over seven times higher in health workers who work shifts. Vaccinations, therapeutic and preventative options should take into consideration not only health and key worker status but also shift worker status
A Cost and Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Stand More at Work (Smart Work) Intervention
This study conducted a cost and cost-benefit analysis of the Stand More AT (SMArT) Work workplace intervention, designed to reduce sitting time. The study was a cluster two-armed randomised controlled trial involving 37 office clusters (146 desk-based workers) in a National Health Service Trust. The intervention group received a height-adjustable workstation with supporting behaviour change strategies. The control group continued with usual pract…
Maturational timing, physical self-perceptions and physical activity in UK adolescent females
Greater biological maturity (i.e. early maturity) in adolescent girls is associated with less involvement in MVPA and appears to be partly explained by lower perceptions of body attractiveness and physical self-worth. Physical activity interventions should consider girls' perceptions of their pubertal related physiological changes during adolescence, particularly among early maturing girls
Dose-response associations between accelerometry measured physical activity and sedentary time and all cause mortality
Process evaluation of the school-based Girls Active programme

Differences in objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour between white Europeans and south Asians recruited from primary care

Associations of Physical Behaviours and Behavioural Reallocations with Markers of Metabolic Health
Standard statistical modelling has shown that the reallocation of sitting time to either standing or stepping may be beneficial for metabolic health. However, this overlooks the inherent dependency of time spent in all behaviours. The aim is to examine the associations between physical behaviours and markers of metabolic health (fasting glucose, fasting insulin, 2-h glucose, 2-h insulin, Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Sensitivity (HOMA-I…
A three arm cluster randomised controlled trial to test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the SMART Work & Life intervention for reducing daily sitting time in office workers

Reducing sedentary time in adults at risk of type 2 diabetes
Current controlled trials ISRCTN08434554 , MRC project 91409. Registered retrospectively on 22 February 2011
Associations of mutually exclusive categories of physical activity and sedentary time with markers of cardiometabolic health in English adults
In this national sample of English adults, being physically active was associated with a better health profile, even in those with concomitant high sedentary time. Low sedentary time independent of physical activity had a positive association with HDL-cholesterol
Energy expenditure during common sitting and standing tasks
The suggested 1.5 MET threshold for sedentary behaviors seems reasonable however some sitting based activities may be classified as non-sedentary. The effect of this on the definition of sedentary behavior and associations with metabolic health needs further investigation
A cluster randomised controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of the ‘Girls Active’ intervention
ISRCTN10688342. Registered 12 January 2015
Providing NHS staff with height-adjustable workstations and behaviour change strategies to reduce workplace sitting time

Is the number of fast-food outlets in the neighbourhood related to screen-detected type 2 diabetes mellitus and associated risk factors
Objective We investigated whether a higher number of fast-food outlets in an individual’s home neighbourhood is associated with increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and related risk factors, including obesity. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Three UK-based diabetes screening studies (one general population, two high-risk populations) conducted between 2004 and 2011. The primary outcome was screen-detected type 2 diabetes. Second…
Methods of Measurement in epidemiology
BACKGROUND: Research examining sedentary behaviour as a potentially independent risk factor for chronic disease morbidity and mortality has expanded rapidly in recent years. METHODS: We present a narrative overview of the sedentary behaviour measurement literature. Subjective and objective methods of measuring sedentary behaviour suitable for use in population-based research with children and adults are examined. The validity and reliability of e…

Anglican Evangelical Missiology 1922-1984
32 Anglican Evangelical Missiology 1922-1984 T.E. YATES, U.K. This short article constitutes a preliminary examination of certain emphases struck by two leading exponents of missiology among Anglican Evangelicals of the period, Bishop Stephen Neill, whose recent death has been a great loss to IAMS, and Max Warren. Some justification is needed for a paper on missiology which is defined in terms of an ecclesiology, not least in the setting of an in…
