Richard H. Thaler
This paper provides an overview of Richard Thaler’s career and the contributions to behavioural economics that earned him the 2017 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. It focuses on his role in exposing and making sense of empirical anomalies in orthodox economics, his analysis of mental accounting, and his work with Cass Sunstein on the notion of libertarian paternalism and the ‘nudge’-based behavioural approach to economic policy. It then…
On Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow
Peter Earl is an associate professor of economics at the University of Queensland, and a rebel. He is a behavioural economist, and was one long before such creatures became acceptable. His interests lie in the economics of information, and more particularly in using contributions from psychology and philosophy to advance the understanding that economics offers. Application is to areas of marketing, strategy and consumer behaviour, as well as inno…
Brands of Economics and the Trojan Horse of Pluralism
This paper examines the current status and prospects of heterodox approaches to economics in relation to the problem of marketing ideas to groups of potential users who see the world in very different ways. It draws lessons from the changing status of behavioural economics and highlights the marketing problems that arise between heterodox economists whose perspectives overlap only partially. Its principal message is that the best hope for heterod…
A Nobel Prize for Governance and Institutions
This paper reviews the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics jointly awarded to Oliver Williamson for his work on governance in organizations and the boundaries of the firm, and to Elinor Ostrom for her work on the governance of common pool resources. We review the careers and the research contributions of Williamson and Ostrom to the theory and analysis of economic institutions of governance. Both winners of this Prize for ‘economic governance’ are thor…
Economics fit for the Queen
The widespread failure of economists to predict the 2008 credit crunch and subsequent Global Financial Crisis led Her Majesty the Queen to ask what had gone wrong. She received very different responses from representatives of mainstream and heterodox perspectives. The mainstream economists' perspective on the crisis contained elements of truth, but it did not concede that there is any need for fundamental reform of how the discipline is taught an…
The Competitive Process in the Age of the Internet
This paper examines some of the impacts of the widespread adoption and use of the Internet in advanced countries on business, consumers and the media. It is argued that while capital costs of entry into Internet‐based businesses may be very low, this does not guarantee that markets in which such firms operate will necessarily be hotly contested, for success may require substantial sunk costs to be incurred in development. It explores the changing…
Information Technology and the Economics of Storing, Spreading and Generating Knowledge
This paper examines the future for the growth and transmission of knowledge with a particular focus on the collision between the zero‐marginal‐cost economics of online publishing and the finite attention spans of those who download content. The paper tries to show that while it is likely that the information revolution will produce much greater equality of access to knowledge, its impacts on the efficiency with which people pick up capabilities o…
Heterodox economics and the future of academic publishing
Purpose This paper aims to examine the role that academic publishers have historically played and how this is being undermined by the revolution in information and communications technology. A central issue here is that of copyright. Although authors need to be protected against plagiarists, the main role of publishers' control over copyright is to generate profits for the publisher by limiting access. Design/methodology/approach The paper explor…

Methodology for a New Microeconomics
This book offers a critical examination of the neoclassical model which typically fails to include an explicit stability analysis. The author demonstrates that much of the sophisticated theoretical literature over the last thirty years can be understood as ad hoc attempts to overcome the deficiencies of models that are limited by the absence of stability analysis. At the end of the book the author explains what we must do to update undergraduate …
