Development of Cross-Cultural Psychological Capital and Its Relationship With Cultural Intelligence and Ethnocentrism
As a key construct in the field of positive organizational behavior, positive psychological capital (or PsyCap) has been well established in the work domain. In the current study, the applicability of PsyCap was extended into the domain of cross-cultural interactions and was tested via a training intervention in the United States ( n = 130) and South Africa ( n = 71). Psychological resource training targeting the underlying components of hope, ef…
Career Success of Women Academics in South Africa
We used career psychology variables found in the literature to explain the career success of academic women in South Africa. The impact of work centrality (moderated by care-giving), motivation, career anchors, and self-efficacy on career success was examined. The sample ( N = 372) included permanently employed women academics in public universities. Path analysis was used to test the proposed model of career success. Seven independent variables …
Professional Work and Actual Work
In this study we sought to answer the question: What work activities do industrial psychologists perform on a daily basis? Our results, based on the responses of a sample of 129 registered industrial psychologists, showed that they spent most of their time performing general human resource work. We also found that industrial psychologists identified strongly with their profession and less strongly with voluntary associations like SIOPSA. We found…
Selection Bias in Virtual Intergroup Contact
Cross-race contact is thought to decrease prejudice if it occurs under the correct conditions. However, people who already have negative attitudes towards other races may structure their social environments so as to avoid contact. We predict that self-interest and ambiguity of the situation will influence this strategy of avoidance. The study presented made use of a computer-based tool which manipulated self-interest and task ambiguity in three t…
Communicative Dynamics of Police-Civilian Encounters
Research in the American West, China, and Taiwan has shown that officers’ communication accommodative practices (and attributed trust in them) can be more potent predictors of satisfaction with the police than are the sociodemographic characteristics of those judging. With Black and White respondents, this study continues this line of work in Louisiana and South Africa and tests a new model about the relationships among perceived officer accommod…

Covert Racism
This paper has a two-fold aim: to illustrate the use of qualitative, linguistic data in the study of overt racism; and to focus on the experience of black people at the receiving end of racist acts. Accounts of the experience of covert racism in the context of an 'open' university in South Africa were examined in terms of a method based on attributional principles (Essed, 1988). It was found that black students' accounts of racist experiences did…
Imposed Identity and Linguistic Strategies
The aim of this paper is to investigate intragroup variability and its effect on social identity. Based on assumptions of power differentials within groups, and the attempts of the relatively more powerful to impose their notion of group membership on the relatively less powerful, a set of theoretical propositions regarding identity and dissent is formulated. These propositions deal with instances of congruence between the notions of identity hel…

Values as a function of ethnicity and socio‐economic status
This paper examines the interactive roles of geographical/ sociopolitical context, ethnicity, and socio‐economic status on values structures in South Africa and Britain. A modified version of the Rokeach Value Survey was administered to South African Indian and English‐speaking students of above average and average family income backgrounds and to British Indian and indigenous students of above average, average, and below average family incomes. …
Achievement-Related Causal Attributions
Students from three South African universities, representing three ethnic groups, gave their own explanations of their perceived success or failure on a class test, and rated the importance of causal attributions derived from previous studies. Effort, academic skills, and understanding emerged as important explanations of success or failure on the open-ended section of the questionnaire. Further analyses failed to support Weiner's (1979) categori…

The attributions were provided by employed high-level managers, professionals, and executives. The five target groups of unemployed were South Africans in general, black and white working class, and black and white middle class. The results showed that voting pattern and religious affiliation influenced attributions for unemploymen…
