Unions as insurance
We investigate to what extent workplace unionization protects workers from external shocks by preventing involuntary job separations. Using the COVID‐19 pandemic as a plausibly exogenous shock hitting the whole economy, we compare workers who worked in unionized and non‐unionized workplaces directly before the pandemic in a difference‐in‐differences framework. Organized Labor, Labor Market Imperfections, and Employer Wage Premia
This article examines how collective bargaining through unions and workplace codetermination through works councils relate to labor market imperfections and how labor market imperfections relate to employer wage premia. Based on representative German plant data for the years 1999-2016, the authors document that 70% of employers pay wages below the marginal revenue product of labor and 30% pay wages above that level. The authors use three distinct methods to investigate the influence of industrial relations on firm wage premia in Germany. This paper presents an alternative explanation of the gender pay gap resting on a simple Hotelling‐style duopsony model of the labour market. Since there are only two employers, equally productive women and men have to commute and face travel cost to do so.
