Selective Attrition Effects in Bereavement Research
The study examined the effects of selective attrition on the picture of bereavement adjustment painted by longitudinal studies. Originally, 185 conjugally and nonconjugally bereaved adults ( M age = 50, range 20–82) were administered a battery of self-report measures indexing psychological functioning and adjustment to loss. A Monte Carlo simulation study was performed to compare the power and the Type I errors of the Wilks's lambda statistic and the Purl and Sen (1971) statistic on transformed data in a one-way MANOVA. The behavior of the Wilks's lambda statistic and the Puri and Sen statistic are studied using normal scores and ranks of the data. Several general correlation patterns are shown in this paper which give exact F tests in an ANOVA procedure with dependent observations. This paper presents the most general correlation patterns one can assume in a one-way and two-way layout and still have the F tests be valid. Exact F tests are given for various designs.
