Associations of Provider‐to‐Population Ratios and Population Health by County‐Level Rurality
PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between provider-to-population ratios, rurality and population health in the United States using counties as the unit of analysis. METHOD: Population ratios for registered nurses (RNs), primary care physicians, and dentists were included in multivariable regression analyses. Population health indices assessed were premature death rate, self-rated health, teen birth rate, and mammography screening rate. FINDING…
The Impact of Insurance Instability on Health Service Utilization
PURPOSE: Discontinuous and no health insurance are major barriers to health care utilization. This paper examines if nonmetropolitan versus metropolitan residence is associated with differences in health care utilization in the face of insurance instability. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of adults aged 18-64 years was conducted using the 2006-2010 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data set (N = 61,039). Negative binomial regression was used …
The Health of Caregiving Grandmothers
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of rural versus urban caregiving grandmothers along with their physical and mental health status. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data produced from the first wave of a longitudinal study of 485 Ohio grandmothers was conducted. Health status was measured using the SF-36 Health Survey and the 20-item CES-D depression scale. Rural-urban classification was made using Rural Urban …
Pharmacy Access to Emergency Contraception in Rural and Frontier Communities
Context: Timely access to emergency contraception (EC) has emerged as a major public health effort in the prevention of unintended pregnancies. American women, especially those living in rural and frontier areas, have one of the highest rates of unintended and teen pregnancy among developed countr…

Rurality, stress, and illness among women
The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the relationships among rurality, stressful life events, and illness in women. A purposive sample of 13 Texas urban and rural women was surveyed. Instruments included an adapted version of the Norbeck Life Experiences Survey for Women and an adapted version of the Wyler Seriousness of Illness Scale. Rurality was measured according to the percentage of lifetime spent in a rural area. A significant cor…
Stressful life Events Among Women
This retrospective comparative study assessed the levels and types of stressful life events among rural versus urban women in Wyoming (n = 157). No significant difference in total life events scores, negative life events scores, positive life events scores, or total number of life events reported was found between the rural and urban samples. Rural women tended to report environmentally related stressors more frequently than urban women, while ur…
The changing role of rural women
Rural women in America represent a rapidly changing group with unique characteristics and health concerns. A review of the available literature reveals that rural women present unique health care needs, especially related to health promotion. Based on the scant data available, identifiable strengths among rural women include their pride in rural heritage and culture, tradition of self‐care, strong family attachment, and community involvement and …
Prescriptive authority for nurse practitioners
We assessed the attitudes of Wyoming physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and nurse practitioners about granting prescriptive authority to nurse practitioners. Support for the issue was mixed, with physicians expressing the strongest disagreement. All groups supported limitation of authority to a specific drug formulary, collaborative regulation, and mandatory certification and continuing education if prescriptive authority is granted to nurse practi…
