  • Decolonially speaking, sensing, and thinking

Open Access•Marcela Polanco, Pankaj Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2025

We address the ethical implications of training and becoming family therapists in the United States when considering the colonial control and management of knowledge by the westernized institutionalized university. We do so decolonially. Through the work of decolonial thinkers, doers, and sensers, we center our discussion on the heteropatriarchal Eurocentric institutionalization of knowledge linked to the development and sustainability of structu…

  • Suicide and the Coloniality of the Senses, Time, and Being

    Open Access•Marcela Polanco, Anthony Pham•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2024•Referências: 9

We engage the decolonial option from Abya Yala, el Caribe, and Eastern Europe with an interest in suicide from our struggles as racialized people and our dehumanization, whereby, for many of us, suicide is not an act of autonomy or resistance but the reaffirmation of death as an ongoing state of living. This is the permanent reality of existence concocted by coloniality and its constitutive effect on lived experience. We depart from the assumptio…

  • Why Am I A Woman? Or, Am I? Decolonizing White Feminism and the Latinx Woman Therapist in Academia

    Marcela Polanco•ARTICLE•Women & Therapy•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

From the perspective of decolonial feminism and the coloniality of gender, in Spanglish, I develop an analysis of the Latinx woman as a racial and gender category of modernity/coloniality. My analysis unfolds through a narrative on my experiences as a Colombian immigrant, Spanglish speaker, and family therapist in academia in the United States. I am guided by an ethic of liberation and the central inquiries for decolonial feminists that contest b…

  • How to Be Unfaithful to Eurocentrism

    Open Access•Marcela Polanco, Nathan Hanson et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2020•Citada por: 2•Referências: 7

From a position of academic activism, we critique the longstanding dominance del production of knowledge that solely implicates fidelity to Eurocentric methodological technologies en qualitative research. Influenced by an Andean decolonial perspective, en Spanglish we problematize métodos of analysis as the dominant research practice, whereby las stories o relatos result en su appropriation, captivity and gentrification, first by researchers’ aut…

  • Reflections on moral care when conducting qualitative research about suicide in the United States military

Marcela Polanco, Saraí Mancías et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2017•Referências: 11

Critical suicidology (White, Marsh, Kral, & Morris, 2016 ) offers a critique of positivism as the mainstream rhetoric of scientific research. In this article, the authors add a critique to the moral detachment of scientific inquiry (Wilkinson & Kleinman, 2016 ) in suicidology. They provide a discussion at the intersection of theory and research when considering moral care of all stakeholders in the implementation of suicide research toward the de…

  • Democratizing Academic Writing

    Open Access•Marcela Polanco•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 5

In this paper, I revise my experience of writing an autoethnographic ( Ellis, 2004) dissertation in the field of family therapy as a Colombian mestiza. I discuss how I grappled with my writing, and, in the process, stumbled into matters of democratizing texts. I problematize male - dominant academic standards, telling of the tensions when maneuvering at marking cultural and gender differences in my text. I focus on the storywriting of my storytel…

  • A Revolutionary Collage of Same Sex Attraction Stories

    Open Access•Marcela Polanco•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2014•Referências: 1

Tony E. Adams' (2011) book presents what could be considered a revolutionary, humanizing understanding of same-sex attraction. This is accomplished by providing a relational understanding of "the closet" and experiences of coming into, living in, and coming out of the closet. It is a production of significant social relevance, denouncing the marginalizing effects of the domains of heteronormativity. While highly scholarly, his evocative storytell…
