  • Genome-wide association analyses identify 44 risk variants and refine the genetic architecture of major depression

    Open Access•eQTLGen eQTLGen, Naomi R Wray et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Genetics•2018

  • GWAS of 126,559 Individuals Identifies Genetic Variants Associated with Educational Attainment

    Open Access•Cornelius A Rietveld, Sarah E Medland et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2013

Genetic College Many genomic elements in humans are associated with behavior, including educational attainment. In a genome-wide association study including more than 100,000 samples, Rietveld et al. (p. 1467 , published online 30 May; see the Perspective by Flint and Munafò ) looked for genes related to educational attainment in Caucasians. Small genetic effects at three loci appeared to impact educational attainment.

  • Manic/Hypomanic Symptom Burden and Cardiovascular Mortality in Bipolar Disorder

    Jess G Fiedorowicz, David A Solomon et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2009

OBJECTIVES: To compare the risk for cardiovascular mortality between bipolar I and bipolar II subtypes and determine correlates of cardiovascular mortality. Bipolar disorder conveys an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. METHODS: Participants with major affective disorders were recruited for the National Institute of Mental Health Collaborative Depression Study and followed prospectively for up to 25 years. A total of 435 participants met…

  • The International HapMap Project

    Open Access•Richard A Gibbs, John W Belmont et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2003

The goal of the International HapMap Project is to determine the common patterns of DNA sequence variation in the human genome and to make this information freely available in the public domain. An international consortium is developing a map of these patterns across the genome by determining the genotypes of one million or more sequence variants, their frequencies and the degree of association between them, in DNA samples from populations with a…

  • Contribution of Emotionally Traumatic Events and Inheritance to the Report of Current Physical Health Problems in 4042 Vietnam Era Veteran Twin Pairs

Seth A Eisen, Rosalind Neuman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1998

OBJECTIVE: To determine the contributions of psychological trauma (exposure to combat during the Vietnam War), genetic factors, childhood experiences shared by twin siblings, and unmeasured experiences not shared by twin siblings to the reporting of current physical health problems a mean of 19 years after military service. METHODS: In 1987, a national sample of 2224 monozygotic and 1818 dizygotic male veteran members of the Vietnam Era Twin Regi…

  • Family resemblance for cranio‐facial measurements in Velanti Brahmins from Andhra Pradesh, India

    Open Access•D V R Poosha, Pamela J Byard et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Citada por: 3•Referências: 9

Maximum likelihood estimates of familial correlations are presented for 12 cranio‐facial measurements taken on 399 nuclear families from Southern India. Marital resemblance is significantly different from zero for head circumference, head breadth, minimum frontal breadth, bizygomatic breadth, total facial height, and nasal height, but not for bigonial breadth, nose breadth, nose depth, or ear dimensions. All other familial correlations are signif…

  • Dental size traits within families

    Open Access•Rosario H Potter, Rosario H Yap Potter et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1983•Citada por: 13•Referências: 13

Previous works on the inheritance of dental traits have traditionally followed Fisher's model for family data under the assumption that phenotypic similarity between relatives is due solely to genetic factors. This study uses recent causal models that incorporate the contribution of nonrandom environmental sources of variation to familial resemblance on dental size. Path analysis was applied to observed interclass and intraclass correlations of s…

  • Social selection in human populations

    Shozo Yokoyama, John P Rice•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1983•Referências: 15

A social selection model for deleterious genes has been studied by considering two alleles at one locus. The model allows for the fitness of an individual to be determined by parental phenotypes as well as by his/her own phenotype. We show that the equilibrium gene frequency depends on the loss of fitness of an individual due to the trait (γ) and due to affected parents (P), and the probability that the heterozygote develops the trait (h). We sho…

  • The effect of social selection due to familial mental retardation on the marriage frequency of normal individuals

Shozo Yokoyama, John P Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1980•Citada por: 2

This paper compares the marriage frequencies of normal individuals with or without mental retardates in their nuclear families for the different combinations of sex and parental and sib phenotypes. Multivariate analysis indicates that there is a difference in the marriage frequencies of normal individuals with and without retarded family members caused by social response to the trait. This response differs according to the sex of the normal indiv…

  • General causal models for sex differences in the familial transmission of multifactorial traits

    John P Rice, John Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1980•Citada por: 5•Referências: 1

A general multifactorial model is given for the inheritance of traits that exhibit a sexual dimorphism. The model allows for polygenic inheritance, cultural transmission, phenotypic assortative mating, and a common environment of rearing. Several cultural mechanisms are described for which transmission from parent to offspring is sex-dependent and for which many different patterns of sex-specific correlations can result. A special case of the gen…
