Work–Family Conflict and Perceived Justice as Mediators of Outcomes of Women's Multiple Workload
Negative impacts of work–family conflicts and the imbalanced division of family work on women's relationship satisfaction and well-being have gained substantial attention from the literature over the last years. The current research adds to the literature by testing the experience of work–family conflicts and perceived justice in the division of family work as possible mediators between women's workloads resulting from the familial and profession…
Perceived justice in the division of domestic labor
This study analyzed the division of domestic labor as a relational phenomenon. Using structural equation modeling with data of dual‐earner couples from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland ( N = 389), actor and partner effects of perceived distributive and procedural justice in the division on relationship satisfaction were investigated. Experience of relationship conflict was considered as possible mediator between perceived justice and relationshi…
Long-Term Effects Between Perceived Justice in the Division of Domestic Work and Women's Relationship Satisfaction
This study investigates the nature of the long-term effects among perceived justice in the division of domestic work, change in the division of domestic work, and relationship satisfaction in a two-wave, 3-year longitudinal study of 389 women from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Results suggest that long-term effects between perceived justice and relationship satisfaction are bidirectional. Initial relationship satisfaction predicted perceived…
Roots and correlates of perceived injustice in the division of family work
This study provides a comprehensive test of the distributive justice framework to explain justice evaluations of the division of family work. Using data of 632 dual‐earner couples with young children from 3 European countries, the analyses provided good support for the distributive justice framework. The frequency with which spouses compared each other's amounts of family work, the outcome of the comparison of the husband's family work with the f…
Social Comparisons and Evaluations of Justice
This research investigates the causal directions of associations between justice evaluations and social comparisons, distinguishing between the outcome and the frequency of making comparisons. Structural equation modeling analyses examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between women's justice evaluations of the division of family work and the outcomes and frequencies of comparing their own shares and their partner's shares of work …

Testing an attribution‐of‐blame model of judgments of injustice
The attribution‐of‐blame model of judgments of injustice, which is the focus of this article, depicts judgments of injustice as blaming of an actor who is seen as responsible for the violation of the entitlement of somebody else without sufficient justification. Responsibility and blame are conceptualized in the model in accordance with Heider (1958) and Shaver (1985). The article briefly describes the background and the propositions of the model…
Perspective-related differences in interpretations of injustice in close relationships
Justice and Social Conflict
This article analyzes possible effects of ideas of justice, perceptions of injustice, and the use of justice arguments on the emergence, course, and resolution of social conflicts. Four functions of justice are identified: (1) ideas of justice and perceptions of injustice can elicit or evoke social conflicts; (2) justice arguments and rhetorics can be used to support one's own position in a dispute; (3) the basic value and the principles and rule…
The Role of Injustice in the Elicitation of Differential Emotional Reactions
Data from a large-scale study on emotional experiences in 37 countries are used to examine correlates of emotion-antecedent events being judged as unfair or unjust. This study included 2,921 students who reported situations in which they had experienced joy, anger; fear, sadness, disgust, shame, and guilt and described their situation appraisals and reactions. Anger-producing events were most frequently perceived as very unfair followed by disgus…
Justice in the Family—Multiple Perspectives on the Division of Labor
Does it only depend on the point of view? Perspective-related differences in justice evaluations of negative incidents in personal relationships
A series of four studies investigated systematic differences between actor and recipient interpretations and justice evaluations of negative incidents in interpersonal relationships. Due to a refined methodology, each negative incident was assessed both by the respective recipient and actor, and each participant reported incidents from both perspectives. The studies provided clear evidence of systematic recipient-actor differences and showed that…
Division of Household Labor and Perceived Justice
From Unfulfilled Wants to the Experience of Injustice
Arrangements and rules of distribution of burdens and duties
Two studies explored the arrangements and rules which are used in the division of household tasks and their frequencies of use with different kinds of tasks. In addition, the studies analysed justice evaluations of the arrangements and rules and the covariation of justice ratings with different kinds of tasks, gender, and relative size of raters' own contributions to the household labour. Data were obtained from two different types of household s…

On the Experience of Injustice
The chapter reviews three lines of research dealing with the experience of injustice. The first set of studies reported explores recurring types of unjust incidents people confront in daily life, and the dimensional and categorial structure of these types of injustice. In the second part of the chapter, a theoretical model of the judgements which contribute to the experience of injustice is presented and two studies testing the model are reported…
What people regard as unjust
The present research was designed to identify types of events in everyday life that people regard as unjust and to find a meaningful structural representation of these types of events. Two hundred and eighty descriptions of unjust events were collected from various student samples using different methodologies. Interestingly, a considerable proportion of the injustices which were reported did not concern distributional or procedural issues in the…

Influencing food preferences of children by ‘if‐then’ type instructions
Three experiments were conducted to examine the effects which ‘if‐then’ instructions of the type ‘if you eat X’, then you will get Y, have on the evaluation of the foods addressed in the ‘if’ and the ‘then’ parts of the instructions, respectively. Based on research on intrinsic motivation it was hypothesized that liking for food X that one is induced to eat by means of ‘if‐then’ instructions will be impaired, whereas liking for food Y offered as …
What people think about an unjust event
This article reports on an initial attempt to improve our knowledge of the cognitive processes which are elicited by the perception of an unjust event. High school students were given a story describing an unfair treatment of a student by his teacher and were asked to place themselves either in the role of the unfairly treated student or in that of a non‐affected fellow‐student. They were then asked to write down all questions and thoughts coming…
Personal relationships
This article evaluates the present state of research on personal relationships on the basis of a selection of recently published books. After shortly sketching the historical development of socio‐psychological research on interpersonal attraction and relationships, eight volumes dealing with relationships are reviewed and salient conceptual, methodological, and theoretical trends in recent research are discussed
