How district leaders can revolutionize professional learning
District leaders want professional learning (PL) experiences to change teachers’ practice for the benefit of students, but too often it has no effect. Teacher educators Sarah Lupo, Joshua M. Pulos, Chelsey M. Bahlmann Bollinger, Mark A. Lewis, and Ben Riden describe five tips to help district leaders engage educators in meaningful and impactful PL experiences with the goal of improving student outcomes. Tips include: listen to teacher voice when …

The majority of Canadians likely behaved as myopic rationalists rather than success-based learners when deciding on their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine
Introduction Successful vaccine promotion communication strategies require knowing how eligible recipients will respond to the opportunity to get vaccinated. Two main classes of recipients are myopic rationalists, those who receive a dose of vaccine only if it maximizes their own instant benefit and if so, do it as soon as possible, and success-based learners, those who learn from others that they perceive to be most successful. Methods A recent …

Literacy Intervention in Secondary Schools Exploring Educators' Beliefs and Practices about Supporting Adolescents' Literacy Learning
There is a need to better understand the complex landscape of adolescent literacy intervention as a shared responsibility across all educational stakeholders. To address this need, we examined the self-reported literacy beliefs and practices about secondary readers and literacy intervention among a group of educators (including administrators, teachers, and specialists) who participated in a year-long professional learning series focused on provi…
A ‘Chinese’ Street (Un)Scripted and (Re)Imagined
Derrick Avenue in Cyrildene, is a striking example of clichéd Chinese (street life) atmosphere in Johannesburg. Owing to its visible markers and demographics, this activity node sparks visions of a spatialised elsewhere. Standing in sharp contrast to a surrounding quiet and mostly residential neighbourhood, Derrick Avenue has been viewed as exceptional, different and closed, resulting in a spatial and cognitive divorce from the rest of the area. …

Identifying the assets of emergent bilingual middle school students’ writing
We highlight how the use of holistic biliteracy and translanguaging perspectives can be applied in the assessment of emergent bilingual middle school students’ writing to counter deficit views of their divergent repertoires. The study took place in a Mountain West middle school with a large Latinx population. We analyzed eleven emerging bilingual students’ (EBs) responses to a writing prompt in an English language arts class. Findings include EBs…
Wake up, This Is Joburg
A single image taken from a high-rise building in inner-city Johannesburg uncovers layers of history—from its premise and promise of gold to its current improvisations. It reveals the city as carcass and as crucible, where informal agents and processes spearhead its rapid reshaping and transformation. In Wake Up, This Is Joburg, writer Tanya Zack and photographer Mark Lewis offer a stunning portrait of Johannesburg and personal stories of some of…

Students who have at some point in their academic careers ever signed up for a course in church history have most likely experienced a common exercise, often referred to as ‘a meeting of the minds’. It entails a kind of role play where prominent theologians from various points along the space-time continuum hypothetically converse around salient issues of faith and life. This form of role playing not only enables the student better to understand …
Scaffolding and Inequitable Participation in Linguistically Diverse Book Clubs
The authors illustrate ways that diverse linguistic repertoires were constrained within a set of classroom book club discussions among sixth‐grade students and their teachers in a public school setting. The study took place in a U.S. Mountain West middle school with a majority population of Latinx students, many of whom were emerging bilinguals ( EB s). In these book clubs, 21 students and two teachers read one of four mystery novels. The groups …

Death and a Maiden
In Death and a Maiden, Myers presents a close study of one case of infanticide in seventeenth-century Brunswick. In many ways, the story of Grethe Schmidt was not at all unusual: a young woman moves from a small village to the big city to work as a serving maid and finds herself facing charges of infanticide. However, there was also much that was very strange about this case: no one could say for sure if Grethe had ever even been pregnant and the…
China between Empires
After the collapse of the Han dynasty, China divided along a north-south line. Lewis traces the changes that underlay and resulted from this split in a period that saw China's geographic redefinition, more engagement with the outside world, significant changes to family life, literary and social developments, and the introduction of new religions.

“Although Adolescence Need Not Be Violent…”
This article reports the findings of a study that examined how and why a group of pre‐service secondary literacy teachers conceptualized and created various curricular activities involving young adult literary texts as part of their work for a teacher education course on teaching literature. Specifically, this article examines the systems of reasoning about the concept of adolescence that undergirded and rationalized these pre‐service literacy te…
Mother-Infant Interaction and Infant Development among the Wolof of Senegal
Caretaker-infant interaction within the first year of life was studied in a group of 10 Wolof infants. Using observational techniques as well as standard testing procedures, several results emerge. The pattern of caretaker-infant interaction was more strongly related to age of infant than any other variable investigated. The often-found result that African infants show precocious development within the first year was confirmed for the Wolof. No re…

The Politics of Ritual Kinship
Confraternities were the most common form of organized religious life in medieval and early modern Europe. They were at once the lay face of the church, the spiritual heart of civic government, and the social kin who claimed the allegiance of peers and the obedience of subordinates. In this 1999 collection, fifteen scholars examine the development of confraternities in Italy, where they emerged first and had the greatest impact. Individual essays…
