  • Climate adaptation in informal areas in hot arid climates

    Open Access•Aynaz Lotfata, João Cortesão et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2023•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

This conceptual and exploratory research study investigates, systematically and holistically, climate‐adaptive spatial design interventions for high‐density informal urban areas in hot arid climates, which remain understudied despite their vulnerability to heat stress and the heat‐vulnerable groups populating them. Five streetscape design prototypes are proposed that include climate‐adaptive spatial interventions appraised qualitatively with cons…

  • Endurance and implementation in small-scale bottom-up initiatives

Open Access•Kim Carlotta Von Schönfeld, Wendy Tan•ARTICLE•Cities•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 32

This article studies how social learning can contribute to change, by applying the concepts of Turning Points and Critical Junctures to the pre-implementation lifecycles of small-scale bottom-up initiatives. It proposes that Turning Points, which have a relatively small immediate impact, and Critical Junctures, which have larger, more visible and more immediate effects, should both be considered crucial to the pre-implementation lifecycle of such…

  • Unpacking social learning in planning

Open Access•Kim Carlotta Von Schönfeld, Wendy Tan et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Research & Practice•2020

Social learning is the process of exchanging and developing knowledge (including skills and experiences) through human interaction. This key planning process needs to be better understood, given the increase and variety of non-planners influencing planning processes. This article explores who learns what from whom through social learning in planning. We unpack social learning theoretically to be able to map it, and employ empirically-based storyt…

  • Maladaptive Planning and the Pro-Innovation Bias

Open Access•António Ferreira, Kim Carlotta Von Schönfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 18

This article argues that a more critical approach to innovation policy within planning is needed and offers recommendations for achieving this. These recommendations entail rethinking the values, focus, speed, and legitimacy of innovations. It takes a critical perspective on how contemporary societies treat rapid innovation as having necessarily positive results in the achievement of objectives such as sustainability and justice. This critical pe…

  • Descriptive epidemiology of fatal respiratory outbreaks and detection of a human‐related metapneumovirus in wild chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) at Mahale Mountains National Park, Western Tanzania

Open Access•Taranjit Kaur, Jatinder Singh et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2008

Over the past several years, acute and fatal respiratory illnesses have occurred in the habituated group of wild chimpanzees at the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. Common respiratory viruses, such as measles and influenza, have been considered possible causative agents; however, neither of these viruses had been detected. During the fatal respiratory illnesses in 2003, 2005 and 2006, regular observations on affected individuals were rec…
