Ancient mobility in northern Jordan during the Roman and Byzantine periods using stable strontium isotope analysis of human dental enamel
Exploring the interplay of bone lesions
This study analyzed the paleopathological conditions of a 30-year-old male unearthed at the site of Ya'amun in northern Jordan. The skeleton was dated back to Iron age. The paleopathological examinations were performed using macroscopic and radiological analyses. The results revealed multiple significant bone lesions, including periosteal osteosarcoma of the right femur, plagiocephaly, asymmetry of the sacrum, vertebral fractures, anemia, and ost…

Buccal dental microwear as an indicator of dietary habits and dietary adaptation of the Byzantine people of Jordan
This study examined buccal microwear from the Byzantine sites of Yajuz and Sa'ad in Jordan (n = 15) to assess different subsistence economies. An Indian Hindu sample (n = 7) was used for comparative purposes. The results show no differences in the pattern of buccal dental microwear between the two Byzantine sites, while a difference was noted when these sites were compared to Hindus. It is probable that cultural variation was the cause of buccal …

A Byzantine Cranium from Jordan
This study describes a Byzantine craniumfrom an archaeological site in Jordan (Khirbit Yajuz). This case study illustrates severity of the multiple dentalpathologies encountered and speculates on the causeof death. The 21-yers-old female of this study sufferedmultiple dental abscesses, where the accumulated pusreached the nasal cavity and the maxillary sinusesthrough a large fistula, probably causing septicemia thatmay have caused her early death.…

The archeological site of Natfa is a rurallate-antiquity site in northern Jordan. The tomb typologypoints to two social ranks: the public compared to thefew elites who might have controlled wealth allocation. The people died at young ages (under 35 years of age). There seems to be reliance on hard food particles richin carbohydrates, which increased the occurrence ofinterproximal caries. A few oblique dental caries arereported, probably caused by u…
Travel and Hospitality in Late Antiquity
The legacy of travel and hospitality in Jordan extends back more than 1,700 years, as evidenced by the late-antique site of Umm el-Jimal. Travel and hospitality revolved around the axes of trade, and generated a suitable subsistence economy in an area with limited resources. Using architectural analysis, ethnography, and archaeological synthesis, the authors show that the city of Umm el-Jimal was built to serve the caravans on the route from Petr…
Contextualizing Buccal Dental Microwear Variations During the Byzantine Period in Jordan
This study scanned 14 buccal surfaces of teeth casts microscopically from the Byzantine sites of Yajuz and Sa'ad in Jordan, and 7 samples from the Natufian site of El Wad in Palestine for the purpose of studying buccal microwear. The results show no differences in the pattern of dental microwear between the two byzantine sites, while a difference was existed when these sites com-pared to El Wad. The results indicate that subsistence economy did n…

Three cemeteries and a Byzantine Church
The Byzantine period in Jordan represents a dramatic change in landscape from the Roman period that preceded it. In this case study the author shows how a sixth century Byzantine church was surrounded by three cemeteries which reflected and maintained the social ranks of the congregation and their different roles in agricultural production
