  • Ramped pyrolysis radiocarbon dating

Open Access•Pınar Erdil, Michael W Dee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

Radiocarbon dating of mortar has long been an intriguing yet challenging field of research. The key issue involves distinguishing archaeologically meaningful carbon, which reflects the original setting of the mortar, from various types of contaminant carbon. Recent applications of the ramped pyrolysis method, which allows for the separation of carbonates based on their thermal decomposition behaviour, have shown significant potential to overcome …

  • Investigating potential radiocarbon anomalies around the time of the Minoan eruption of Thera

Open Access•Pınar Erdil, Margot Kuitems et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•Referências: 75

The date of the Thera eruption has been a subject of intense debate since the mid-20th century. In recent years, the disagreements have escalated with the introduction of IntCal20. The increased number of annual measurements around the time period of the eruption has highlighted potential fluctuations in the atmospheric radiocarbon record, shedding new light on the date of the disastrous event. The Centre for Isotope Research in Groningen has alr…

  • Radiocarbon evidence over the apparent grand solar minimum around 400 BCE

Open Access•Michael W Dee, Andrea Scifo et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025

Grand solar minima are periods spanning from decades to more than a century during which solar activity is unusually low. A cluster of such minima occurred during the last millennium, as evidenced by reductions in the numbers of sunspots observed and coeval increases in cosmogenic isotope production. Prior to the period of instrumental records, natural archives of such isotopes are the only resources available for detecting grand solar minima. He…

  • The absolute chronology of the North Cemetery at Ayios Vasileios, Laconia

    Open Access•Pınar Erdil, Michael W Dee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Referências: 4

We establish the absolute chronology of Ayios Vasileios North Cemetery using 14 C dating. • KDE model of 56 14 C dates is compared to ceramic chronology of Mycenaean Greece. • The cemetery was in continuous use through Middle Helladic III to Late Helladic IIB. In mortuary archaeology, it can be particularly difficult to establish a spatiotemporal framework for specific contexts such as commingled or unfurnished burials. This is the case for the A…

  • A stepwise multidisciplinary approach to determine the date and provenance of historical wooden objects

    Open Access•Marta Domínguez-Delmás, Hilke Schroeder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2023•Referências: 4

We present a stepwise multidisciplinary approach combining woodworking expertise, dendrochronology, DNA genotyping and radiocarbon dating to determine when, where and how historical wooden objects were made. The effective implementation of this approach is demonstrated with a set of wooden stocks from the Rijksmuseum collections in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). In 2019, preceding an exhibition about slavery, stocks made of oak (Quercus sp.) were d…

  • Wood from the Netherlands around the Time of the Santorini Eruption Dated by Dendrochronology and Radiocarbon

Open Access•Margot Kuitems, Johannes Van Der Plicht et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Citada por: 5•Referências: 10

Eighteen new high-precision radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates obtained for dendrochronologically dated wood from Bodegraven, the Netherlands are reported. They are relevant for establishing the revised calibration curve around the time of the Bronze Age Santorini eruption. Most of our new data overlap within one sigma with IntCal13, but a few data points are slightly increased in 14 C age compared to IntCal13

  • Woolly mammoth δ13C and δ15N values remained amazingly stable throughout the last ∼50,000 years in north-eastern Siberia

  • CHRONOscope

Open Access•Andreas Neocleous, Margot Kuitems et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Referências: 13

Information about the global climate, the carbon cycle, changes in solar activity, and a number of other atmospheric processes are preserved in the carbon-14 and the beryllium-10 records. However, these isotope datasets are large and cumbersome to work with. We have designed a self-contained, easy-to-use application that allows for more efficient analysis of different periods and patterns of interest. For several applications in atmospheric model…

  • Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of well-preserved Middle Pleistocene bone collagen from Schöningen (Germany) and their paleoecological implications

  • Elevated δ15N values in mammoths

Open Access•Margot Kuitems, Thijs Van Kolfschoten et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2015•Citada por: 19•Referências: 35

The extinct Pleistocene woolly mammoth bone collagen shows compared with collagen from other contemporaneous large herbivores remarkably high δ15N values. In order to investigate if the observed discrepancy in δ15N values between Pleistocene woolly mammoths and coeval large ungulates also exists in modern relatives, we investigated the δ15N (and δ13C) values in nails of modern proboscideans, rhinoceroses and horses kept in captivity and with a co…
