  • Desenredando El Caos. Un Análisis De La Circulación De Los Adornos De Piedra Verde Durante La Prehistoria Reciente De La Península Ibérica a Través De La Investigación De Redes

  • Resolution of a sign (1). Regarding a Neolithic slab in the petit mont passage grave (Arzon, France)

    Open Access•Serge Cassen, Valentin Grimaud•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2020

Our communication will make use of the word “resolution” in order to address both the original meanings of prehistoric signs and the new technical capabilities that make it possible to detect ancient engravings on stone. An interpretation of an iconographic program belonging to such an old period (6500 BP) relies on a precise inventory of material removals on the rock surface so that all the signs can be detailed and labelled. For this, we will f…

  • Real and ideal European maritime transfers along the Atlantic coast during the Neolithic

    Open Access•Serge Cassen, Carlos Rodríguez-Rellán et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2019•Citada por: 2

The history of research on the Neolithic of the Atlantic façade shows how speculation about prehistoric mobility, especially across the sea, is mainly based on three types of archaeological evidence: megalithic monuments, rare stones, and pottery decoration. With the aim of approaching the issue from other perspectives, we have focused on the Morbihan area, a focal point of the European Neolithic during the mid-5th millennium BC. The analysis of …

Open Access•Serge Cassen, Valentin Grimaud et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2018•Referências: 5

Following the exceptional discovery of Neolithic engravings on a boulder at Vallée aux Noirs in the Fontainebleau forest, south of Paris, an excavation trench was opened in order to access the buried part of the decorated rock panel and explore the stratigraphic context of the artwork. A palaeosol was found two metres below the modern ground level, underneath multiple layers of sterile sandy soil forming a very compact sequence from which only on…

  • The ‘Historiated’ Neolithic Stele of Saint-Samson-sur-Rance (Côtes-d'Armor, France)

Open Access•Serge Cassen, Valentin Grimaud et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2018

The stone of Saint-Samson is a Neolithic stele of 70 tons and 10 m of probable length. Its intriguing leaning position and its very regular morphology have aroused curiosity since medieval times. Three of its four faces—oriented towards the cardinal points—display engravings that were discovered in the 1970s. Now, a new recording protocol has combined 2D techniques for emphasizing the contrast of the engravings (oblique rotating lights) and 3D me…

  • Neolithic flat-based pots from the Carnac Mounds in the light of Cycladic ‘frying pans’

Open Access•Cassen Serge, Serge Cassen et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2012

A rare type of pottery, found in four single graves under earthen mounds in the Carnac region of Brittany, consists of a circular, flat-based vessel with a near-vertical wall. On the basis of the equipment known from elsewhere in the world, it is possible that the morphology of these dishes is related to processes involved in the production of salt. To help us in exploring their function, we chose to compare these vessels with another enigmatic c…

Spectroradiometric analysis and macroscopic characteristics indicate that, in all probability, these two artefacts — which are exceptional in this region of Europe — had come from the Neolithic quarries on Mont Viso, in the Italian Alps, some 950 km away as the crow flies. The two axehead fragments from Golianovo pr…

A "flushed " bird is engraved on the Bronzo stela, in full flight, its head turned to the exterior, superposed over a white quartz vein; a crook, equally treated in cut-away engraving, bars its passage. At a first reading, a plausible identification of the bird seemed to prevail and the Columbidae met with our approval. However, more deliberate analysis and an effort at the graphic deconstruction of the motif allows the identification to be recon…

We are going to demonstrate that it is possible to invest an Armorican stele of the 5th millennium with an order of meanings in the same way as a language or a kinship system; in other words, a set of operations destined to ensure, between individuals and groups, a certain type of communication. But such demands necessitate modifying established patterns, because none agree on the idea that we have conceived of a peaceful passage to agriculture a…

  • Pigeon-vole !

  • The Role of Stone in Neolithic Monumental Art

    Open Access•Guillaume Robin, Serge Cassen•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2009•Referências: 4

In the last few decades, there has been a great deal of interest in the stone used as building material in megalithic monuments. Several studies have been carried out on the location of quarries and on the monumental and symbolic role of stones in various types of architecture (O'Sullivan 1996; 2006; Cooney 2000, 135-8). However, very few works exist on the relationship between the parietal art of these monuments and the materials that carry them…

  • From Mont Viso to Slovakia

Two fragments of large jadeitite axeheads were discovered in a Lengyel enclosure at Golianovo (Republic of Slovakia), close to Nitra.
