Investigation of an underestimated area located in the center of Teotihuacan, The spatial relationship of the detected structures with the San Juan River
Lime treatments for food preparation identified in Postclassic Xochimilco (Mexico) ceramic sherds
Archaeological ceramics in Mesoamerica sometimes display a whitish layer in the inner part of the vessels, which has been related to the use of lime to obtain alkaline solutions for treating foodstuffs, in particular maize, in a process that is called nixtamalization. In this paper we provide more evidence for this practice, and we also suggest that alkaline solutions might have been used to process other foodstuff. With this aim we have studied …
Excavations at the Southern Neighborhood Center of the Tlajinga District, Teotihuacan, Mexico
Investigations of the Proyecto Arqueológico Tlajinga Teotihuacan (PATT) in 2019 focused on the southern neighborhood center of this cluster of non-elite residences in the southern periphery of the ancient Mexican metropolis. Our objective was to better understand the social infrastructure of public space within the district and how it tied its inhabitants together. Our methods included excavations at two large architectural complexes, geophysical…
Searching with georadar ancient T’hó, a Mayan city underneath the modern Merida, Yucatan
T’hó –a Mayan city cited in historical documents – has been discovered and is now a topic in current archaeological discussions and research topics due to a joint UNAM and UADY research project. This project encompassed several steps, including the recording of material recovered from the city’s subsoil while monitoring urban infrastructure programs, as well as the study of historical documents and maps and finally verifying hypothesis by using g…

Geophysical Prospection at the Formative Site of Altica in the Teotihuacan Valley Piedmont
The Formative-period site of Altica in the Patlachique Range poses many methodological problems when designing an excavation strategy. Three millennia of erosion, twentieth-century chisel plowing, and modern reforestation efforts have destroyed or disturbed most surface architecture above the local tepetate bedrock. As such, in the early stages of the Altica Project, the primary concern was the detection and identification of subsurface features,…

Chemical Residues as Anthropic Activity Markers. Ethnoarchaeology, Experimental Archaeology and Archaeology of Food Production and Consumption
Chemical residues preserved in floors can be considered anthropic activity markers. In fact, residues are strictly related to the activities performed and reflect their spatial distribution. We present a synthesis of the work carried out over the last few decades in Mexico and Italy related to the study of chemical residues in floors. Residues can be identified performing specific chemical analyses both of plastered or earthen floors samples. We …

Pulque was one of the most important beverages in the Central Plateau of Mesoamerica. Its consumption continued during the Colonial period and the beverage is still popular in some places, although its cultural survival is at risk in others. In this paper we present the results of experimental and ethnoarchaeological studies aimed at recognizing the chemical residues produced by pulque production and consumption in the archaeological record. Two …
Plasters from Different Buildings of the Sacred Precinct of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City)
In this work, we present the results of the characterization of 20 lime plaster samples taken from the Sacred Precinct of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), the ancient capital of the Aztec empire. The samples come from different buildings of this precinct (A, B and D) and from the west façade of phase VI of the Templo Mayor pyramid. The objective of the work is to characterize the plaster samples, to understand the raw materials used, and to evaluate t…

Suprahousehold consumption and community ritual at La Laguna, Mexico
Recent work at La Laguna in Central Mexico provides an excellent illustration of the way in which information from architecture, food remains, ceramic vessels and chemical signatures can be brought together to demonstrate communal feasting associated with specific structures and public spaces. Structure 12M-3 contained a range of evidence indicative of food preparation and consumption. Ritual effigy vessels depicted deities connected with food an…

Characterization and Provenance of Lime Plasters From the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City)
In this work, we present the results of the analyses of 20 lime plaster samples taken from the Templo Mayor (Great Temple), the main pyramid of Tenochtitlan (Mexico), the ancient capital of the Mexicas. The samples were analysed to recover information on the mixtures used in the fabrication of the plasters and for the provenance of the raw materials (in particular, limestone) used to make the plasters. The characterization of the samples was done…
Integration of ground remote sensing surveys and archaeological excavation to characterize the medieval mound (Scarlino, Tuscany-Italy)
The landscape of Scarlino (Grosseto, Italy) has been studied by the Department of Archaeology (University of Siena) since 1979. The archaeological site was identified in vertical air photos, but the unavailability of GPS devices at the time made location in the field difficult. Aerial photo analysis allowed us to interpret the evidence as a triple enclosure. This paper presents the data collected with magnetic, GPR and Automatic Resistivity Profi…
Geophysical prospection and aerial photography in La Laguna, Tlaxcala, Mexico
Introduction The paper presents the results of a remote-sensing program at the La Laguna archaeological site, a Late Formative period (c. 600 BC – AD 100) regional center located in northern Tlaxcala (19°30’35” N / 98°00’20” W). The site was the largest community in the region during this period, when adjacent areas of central Mexico witnessed an initial phase of urbanization and state formation (Carballo and Pluckhahn, 2007; Merino Carrión, 1989…
Provenance of the Limestone Used in Teotihuacan (Mexico)
This work shows the preliminary results of an international project for the interdisciplinary study of the limestone used in the plasters of the ancient city of Teotihuacan. The limestone provenance was studied using a new approach based on the chemical analysis of the lime lumps that were selected because they represent the composition of the original limestone rock. The results show that the applied methodology was successful and that the limes…
Chemical residues in lime‐plastered archaeological floors
In addition to research carried out on soils and sediments, there is a parallel field of research applying the same analytical techniques to the study of chemical residues in stuccoes. The most common material used to build floors in Mesoamerica after the Classic period was lime plaster. The study of residues in stuccoes becomes, therefore, a very promising study area. In last 25 years the Archaeological Prospection Laboratory at Mexico's Nationa…

A magnetic and electrical study of archaeological structures at Loma Alta, Michoacan, Mexico
This paper describes the results of high spatial resolution magnetic and resistivity surveys of the Loma Alta site in Michoacan, Mexico. This site is the largest of a series of man-made earthen islands built up within an ancient freshwater basin. Occupied during three main phases from 100 BC to AD 850, the site now shows no surface detail of the underlying structural complexity. Test pits and trenches excavated during several field seasons reveal…
The Study of Activities in Classic Households
Mesoamerican household sites were often deserted gradually, leaving very little de facto refuse for analysis. Starting with archaeological and paleobiological distribution patterns, this study adds a new dimension to the spatial study of two Classic households by plotting chemical concentrations in probable activity areas
