The Lithoscape of Blombos Cave, South Africa
Archaeological research in the southern coastal region of South Africa continues to demonstrate the importance of this region for understanding the emergence of complex behaviours among Homo sapiens . Specifically, the excavation of the Middle Stone Age layers at Blombos Cave (c. 100-72 ka) has identified extensive evidence for symbolism, such as portable art (engraved ochre) and personal ornaments (perforated shells). However, some recurrent sub…
Identifying precontact ceramic resource areas in the boreal forest of northern Manitoba, Canada
The objective of this study is to better understand how people gained resources to make Middle and Late Woodland pottery from Sipiwesk Lake in northcentral Manitoba. To meet this objective, we conducted petrographic analyses of sediments from Sipiwesk Lake, archaeological sherds from sites around the lake, material from outwashes, fired experimental tiles, and sherds from archaeological sites across the boreal forest ecozone and the prairie ecozo…

Combining chert provenance and least-cost pathway analyses to reconstruct Pre-Dorset and Dorset mobility on southern Baffin Island
Provenance and exchange of basalt grinding stones of EB III Tell es-Safi/Gath, Israel
Manual Point Cloud Classification and Extraction for Hunter-Gatherer Feature Investigation
For archaeologists, the task of processing large terrestrial laser scanning (TLS)-derived point cloud data can be difficult, particularly when focusing on acquiring analytical and interpretive outcomes from the data. Using our TLS lidar data collected in 2013 from two compositionally different, low Arctic multi-component hunter-gatherer sites (LdFa-1 and LeDx-42), we demonstrate how a manual point cloud classification approach with open source so…
A human-centered GIS approach to modeling mobility on southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada
Southern Baffin Island has been occupied for several millennia, but its enormous size, coupled with scarcity of identified inland archaeological sites that can be confidently linked to coastal occupations, makes modeling ancient seasonal mobility across the region through traditional cost-surface least-cost pathway approaches impractical. We present a method that combines weighted multi-criteria cost surface analysis with a watershed function to …
Characterizing southern Baffin Island chert
Characterization of Chert Artifacts and Two Newly Identified Chert Quarries on Southern Baffin Island
Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) trace element analysis was used to characterize raw chert from one secondary (LeDx-42) and two primary (LbDt-1 and LdDx-2) sources on southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. Raw chert trace element data are compared to ICP-MS trace element data for chert artifacts from a nearby Palaeo-Eskimo archaeological site (LeDx-42). Geochemical consistencies identified among the analyzed samples support…

Characterizing Quartz Artefacts
Visual and geochemical analyses of 30 pre‐contact quartz tools from the C hurchill R iver basin of northern M anitoba were used to provisionally assess source provenance based on comparison to local quartz quarry data. The results indicate that tools made from quartz acquired from these quarries were transported and eventually deposited into archaeological sites up to 200 km away. Transport of this quartz, which is of relatively moderate quality,…
A combined visual-geochemical approach to establishing provenance for pegmatite quartz artifacts
Clay acquisition and processing strategies during the first millennium A.D. in the Thukela River basin, South Africa
Despite a sizable corpus of pottery provenance studies in southern Africa, there has been no systematic research aimed at comparing modern and ancient production strategies. In this paper we present a model of Zulu clay acquisition and processing strategies and outline its implications for understanding the mineralogical composition of ceramics produced by early farming communities in the Thukela River basin in South Africa. Through a comparison …
Combining visual and geochemical analyses to source chert on Southern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada
A combined methodological approach using visual and geochemical methods is introduced and preliminary results of a study illustrating its effectiveness to determine chert source provenance are presented. This study focuses on lithic debitage and raw chert samples collected from the interior of southern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada. Chert is abundant throughout this region yet it occurs as small, scattered surface nodules that are highly variable …
A new approach to determining the geological provenance of turquoise artifacts using hydrogen and copper stable isotopes
