  • Unravelling the link between the simulacra of St Clemente of Palácio Nacional de Queluz and St Fortunato & St Semuc of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Almada

Open Access•Teresa Ferreira, Margarida Nunes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2026

This work presents a comparative osteological, material, and technical investigation of three 18th-century simulacra preserved in Portugal, aiming to clarify their origin, circulation, assembly, and shared workshop practices. Archival documentation and authentication seals confirmed their Roman origin and circulation during the 1770s. Radiocarbon dating places the skeletal remains between the 3rd and 5th centuries, spanning both periods of Christ…

  • Physical Impairment and Care Estimation in Medieval Estremoz (Portugal)

Open Access•Ana Curto, Célia Lopes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•Referências: 7

This study aims to compare diet and skeletal health indicators between individuals with varying degrees of physical impairment and the general adult population from medieval Estremoz, Portugal, to assess their health status and their survival outcomes. Skeletal remains from 41 male adult individuals, including 8 with physical impairments and 33 from the general population, were analyzed. The impairment of these individuals was described, and thei…

  • Variability of lesions and lesion patterns in possible treponematosis cases

Ana Curto, Teresa Fernandes et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2025

The findings indicate considerable variation in the lesions and lesion patterns associated with treponematosis, even within the same archaeological site. The radiocarbon data implies the presence of pre-Columbian treponemal disease or a rapid progression to the tertiary phase of the disease. This study represents the oldest cases of treponematosis in Portugal and the only one with more than one individual affected from the same archaeological sit…

  • Family in Medieval Society

    Open Access•Claudia Gomes, Ana Curto•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2024•Referências: 22

One of the periods with the greatest social, cultural, and religious changes was, without a doubt, the European medieval period. The concept of “Family” was one of the fields that gradually evolved, from individuals who shared the same biological lineage, to members of the same “House”. One of the ways to study the concept of “Family” in ancient periods is through a bioarchaeological perspective, where both anthropology and genetics have proven t…

  • Comparing morphological (os coxae) and metric (long bone length) sex estimation methods in archaeological collections

Ana Curto, Sónia Ferro et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2024•Citada por: 2

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the internal consistency of sex estimation using metric (long bone length) and morphological (os coxae) methodologies from different bones and across different archaeological populations from different regions. Materials and Methods: Sex was estimated using characteristics of the pelvis and compared with sex estimations using long bone length. Portuguese (659 females; 906 males) and English (141 fe…

  • Clubfoot and its implications for the locomotion of a medieval skeleton from Estremoz, Portugal

    Open Access•Ana Curto, Teresa Fernandes•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

OBJECTIVE: This study describes foot bone anomalies and the degenerative changes associated with locomotion adaptations. MATERIALS: An adult male (approximately 29-46 years old) from Estremoz, Portugal (13th-15th century). METHODS: The skeletal anomalies observed in this skeleton were described and measurements were compared between both sides of the individual and with the mean of the adult males from the same collection. RESULTS: The most anoma…

  • Effect of different healing stages on stable isotope ratios in skeletal lesions

    Open Access•Ana Curto, P Mahoney et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2020•Citada por: 2•Referências: 71

Introduction Physiological stress is one of the various factors that can have an impact on stable isotope ratios. However, its effect on bone collagen stable isotope ratios is still not fully understood. This study aims to build on previous research on how different disease stages may affect bone collagen stable isotope ratios. Materials and Methods Carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotope ratios were assessed in 33 skeletons that retained e…
