Acculturation of Chilean Miners in the Sierra Nevada, Alta California
Chilean miners were among the first foreigners to arrive in California during the Gold Rush of the mid-1800s. They were quickly subjected to violent ethnic conflicts with Euroamerican miners that forced many to withdraw from California. Those who chose to stay made adjustments to their material culture and cultural practices in order to ease tensions and gain acceptance into Euroamerican society.
