Discrimination in healthcare access among transgender women in Indonesia
Access to medical services is not equally experienced by all transgender individuals. Healthcare services for transgender people still require greater attention and inclusivity within society today. This study aims to examine self-reported experiences faced by transgender women from healthcare providers when accessing medical services and to identify the structural and interpersonal factors that contribute to inequitable healthcare delivery. We c…
Assessing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on uptake of HIV treatment in Bandung and Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Understanding the financial hardships faced by TB and HIV patients during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic had significant widespread financial impacts, resulting in decreased household income, increased unemployment, and disrupted health services. Despite the higher prevalence of infections of tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in poorer populations, research on the financial challenges faced by these populations during the pandemic is still limited. Indonesia recorded the highest COVID-19 cases in Southeas…
“I pity the TB patient”
INTRODUCTION: In Indonesia, a country with around 280 million people and the second-highest tuberculosis (TB) incidence rate in the world, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB care needs careful assessment so that future response strategies can be strengthened. We conducted a study comparing TB testing and treatment rates before and during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, and the reasons for any disruptions to care. M…

Supervised testing was offered first, and unsupervised was only offered to an individual who declined supervised testing. Included participants were MSM who did not have a HIV test result in the last 6 months and declined referral to facility-based testing. Of 81…
Sensitivity and specificity of routine diagnostic work-up for tuberculosis in lung clinics in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
NCT02219945 , clinicaltrials.gov . Registered 19 August 2014 (retrospectively registered)
Increasing HIV treatment access, uptake and use among men who have sex with men in urban Indonesia
Men who have sex with men make up one of four key populations identified as critical to a successful HIV response in Indonesia. Despite international policies supporting HIV treatment in low- and middle-income countries, Indonesia is one of the few countries experiencing low coverage of HIV treatment and little decrease in HIV incidence. There is poor retention in care and low viral suppression rates among key populations such as men who have sex…
Impacts of stigma on HIV risk for women who inject drugs in Java
Boyfriends and injecting
The international literature shows that HIV-risk behaviour for women mostly occurs in the context of intimate relationships. Power imbalances in the social, economic and cultural spheres put women at risk. This paper addresses the roles of male partners in women's engagement in drug-use behaviour and drug-related HIV-risk behaviour in Indonesia. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with 19 women who had injected drugs in the previous mo…
Journeys to tuberculosis treatment
Most TB patients took over a month to reach a DOTS facility after symptoms appeared and had consulted a number of providers. Their income and advice from household members and friends were factors that influenced their care seeking behavior most
