A tusk plate with an engraving from the Paleolithic period
This study introduces the data on a mammoth ivory plate with engravings, stored in the collection of the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble. This artifact was likely excavated during archaeological researches at the Podluzhye I (Berdyzh) site in 1970 under the supervision of V.D. Budko. Despite publications mentioning this item, the mammoth ivory plate, already in a fragmentary state, has long been neglected. This is primarily due to the lack of fiel…
Methodology for Creating 3D Models of Mammoth Tusk Beads from the Sungir Site
Mammoth ivory beads, a key element of Upper Palaeolithic ornaments (40–12 ka BP), are widely distributed across Central and Eastern Europe. They are most often found as isolated artifacts, while reconstructions of composite ornaments are possible only from rare burial contexts. Among these, the burials at the Sungir site (30–26 ka BP) are of particular importance, having yielded thousands of beads, many preserved in situ. The large quantity of fi…
Ivory Bead Ornaments from the Sungir Paleolithic Site
Ivory Bead Ornaments from the Sungir Paleolithic Site
This article presents the results of a study of composite ornaments made of ivory beads from burials of a man and two adolescents, discovered by O.N. Bader at Sungir, a site dating to the Final Early Upper Paleolithic (30–26 ka BP). The burials are excessively rich in such ornaments, which were made by stringing many beads on a sinew or thread made of organic material. Strings of beads preserved in burials and retaining the order of constituent e…
Unique Ivory Artifact from The Upper Palaeolithic Site Strelka-1 (Krasnoyarsk)
Archaeological site Strelka-1 is situated in the historical part of Krasnoyarsk at the confluence of the Yenisey and Kacha rivers. The richest Upper Palaeolithic layer 3 is confined to the south-eastern part of the promontory. The layer contains numerous stone tools and waste products, animal bone fragments, bone and antler tools, remains of fires. Worthy of special attention is a small group of mammoth ivory artifacts, including a massive ivory …

The Radiocarbon Chronology of Late Upper Palaeolithic Sites in the Center of the Russian Plain
The Late Upper Palaeolithic of Kostёnki and adjacent territories (~21-12 ka uncal BP/~27-14 ka cal BP) remains the period least well-documented with absolute dating evidence. During this study, 19 samples were collected from the cultural layers of ten sites and submitted to the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU) for radiocarbon dating. The results obtained significantly advance our knowledge of these sites' ages and of the development of …
Ivory beads of the Sungir Paleolithic site
The article presents the results of an analysis of the shapes of ivory beads from the burials of a male and adolescent boys discovered in 1964 and 1969 by O.N. Bader at the Sungir site (Vladimir region, Russia), the habitation of which dates back to the end of the Early period (30-27 thousand BC) of the Upper Paleolithic. Beads are diverse in shape, small in size, extremely standardized products, which are one of the most mass and widespread cate…
Finger Rings from the Double Burial of Teenagers at the Sungir Upper Paleolithic Site
The article presents the results of a technical and morphological study of a series of ivory finger rings discovered in 1969 by O. N. Bader during his excavations of a unique double burial of teenagers at the Sungir Upper Palaeolithic site (35—29 thousand years ago), situated at the eastern suburb of the city Vladimir in Vladimir province of Russia. The objects under study are nine artifacts in the shape of small rings made of mammoth ivory, incl…
Fossil molluscan shells and polychaeta tubes from the Yudinovo and Eliseevichi Upper Paleolithic settlements of
In the article we presents the results of the study of the mollusks and polychaetes remains collected during more than 80 years of excavations of the Yudinovo and Eliseevichi 1 Upper Paleolithic settlements (Dnieper region). The Yudinovo and Eliseevichi 1 sites, located on the right bank of the Sudost’ River 45 km from each other are two large settlements with mammoth bone dwellings. The sites belonging to different cultural traditions have been …
The New Anthropomorphic Figurine From the Khotylevo 2 Upper Paleolithic Site (Location C, 2020 Excavations)
The characteristics of settlement structure formation on the Upper Paleolithic site of Yudinovo according to archaeological and geochemical investigations of 2015—2018
This article presents the results of recent archaeological and geochemical studies at the Late Palaeolithic site of Yudinivo. The reported research was focused on the area with dwelling No. 5, a large pit with mammoth bones on its bottom and an ash damp. The micro-stratigraphy of the cultural layer makes it possible to identify a number of stages in the life history of large household constructions. It has been established that an ash damp was fo…

The Tempo of Cultural Change in the Kostenki Upper Paleolithic
The Kostenki-Borshchevo site complex (Voronezh region, Russia) serves as the foundation of Eastern Europe’s Upper Paleolithic chronocultural framework. Here we present new radiocarbon dates for three Kostenki sites. Dates of ∼27.5–27 ka BP for Kostenki 15 suggest that its archaeological layer accumulated over a short period. These results help to confirm that the site is unrelated to Aurignacian assemblages. New dates for the Kostenki-Avdeevo Cul…

D modeling in the studies of the portable art geometrical images of the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic of Eastern Europe
One of the plots of the portable art forms of Eastern Europe is abstract, geometric, symbolic images that cannot be deciphered directly. Most of the currently known such geometric images from the archaeological sites of the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic of Eastern Europe were applied to finished bone products — tools, weapons, household and non-utilitarian items, as well as bones of various animals without traces of processing using various cu…

The Age of the ‘Anosovka-Tel’manskaya Culture’ and the Issue of a Late Streletskian at Kostёnki 11, SW Russia
Triangular, concave-base ‘Streletskian points’ are documented in several assemblages from the Kostёnki complex of Upper Palaeolithic sites in south-western Russia. Some of these assemblages have been argued to evidence very early modern human occupation of Eastern Europe. However, Streletskian points are also recorded from younger contexts, notably at Kostёnki 11, where examples are attributed both to Layer V and the stratigraphically higher Laye…

Deciduous Human Teeth From the Upper Paleolithic Site of Yudinovo, Western Russia
Population affinities of the Timonovka-Yudinovo Upper Paleolithic people are reconstructed on the basis of three isolated deciduous teeth––a lower lateral incisor, lower and upper second molars, likely representing three individuals––from Yudinovo in the middle Desna basin (15–12 ka BP), found in 1987–1996. Based on measurements and descriptive traits and computed microtomography, the teeth were compared with those from other Upper Paleolithic si…
