Investigating the Reverse Transfer From L3 Spanish, French, and Italian to L2 English in Tense and Aspect
This study investigates whether the knowledge of two perfective distinctions (current relevance vs. simple past completion) that learners have acquired from their L3 leads to reverse transfer, observable in their comprehension of the corresponding L2 English forms (present perfect and simple past). We analyze the manifestations of this transfer across three levels: formal, semantic, and conceptual. The participants consist of 50 L1 Mandarin Chine…
The use of the past tense aspect in Spanish by study At-Home and Study-Abroad Chinese learners in semi-guided writing tasks
This work focuses on the influence of L2 acquisition environments (At-Home and Study-Abroad) on the language proficiency of L1 Mandarin Chinese learners of Spanish. We chose the use of Spanish past tense aspect (pretérito indefinido and pretérito imperfecto) as the entry point to analyze Chinese learners proficiency in three semi-guided writing tasks. Our results reveal that the different teaching objectives in these acquisition environments prom…
The development of dynamicity in the acquisition of Spanish by Chinese learners
The acquisition of aspect in L2 is influenced by the properties of the lexical-aspectual class, coercion at the syntactic-pragmatic interface and grounding information (foreground and background) in discourse. This paper addresses how these linguistic functions influence the acquisition of Spanish aspectual past tenses (pretérito indefinido and pretérito imperfecto) by Mandarin Chinese learners. The results show that activities and accomplishment…
La adquisición del aspecto en español por aprendices chinos
Este trabajo se centra en la adquisición del pretérito indefinido y el pretérito imperfecto del español por aprendices chinos. A partir de investigaciones anteriores, predecimos que las diferencias del sistema aspectual entre el chino mandarín y el español pueden suponer un reto para los aprendices en el uso y comprensión del aspecto en la interlengua. Además, creemos que la adquisición del aspecto no está sincronizada en el nivel morfológico y s…
Topic-drop versus pro-drop
Recent developments within the so-called Principles and Parameters model of acquisition argue for a clear-cut separation of Universal Grammar (UG) principles from parametric options and locate all parameters within functional categories (Borer, 1984; Lebeaux, 1988; Chomsky, 1991). This has led Tsimpli and Roussou (1991) to propose that adult L2 (second language) learners have access to UG principles but do not reset the parameters of the L2, whic…
L1/L2 Spanish grammars and the pragmatic deficit hypothesis
In recent research on primary (L1) and non-primary (L2) acquisition, special attention has been given to whether syntactic development is subject to a continuity condition. While it has been proposed that the continuity condition applies to both L1 and L2 syntactic growth, the changes that take place in developing grammars have sometimes been attributed to other cognitive systems. Specifically, it has been proposed that child grammars are ‘underspe…
