    Open Access•Christopher Sevara, Roderick B Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2020•Referências: 24

The Prospecting Boundaries project explores the Mazaro river corridor from a landscape archaeological perspective, using integrated prospection techniques to recover traces of past human activity and environmental contexts. One key research area is Guletta, a zone of dense multiperiod activity situated on the rocky plain above the river. In this paper, we detail results from recent work at Guletta, which has revealed numerous previously undocumen…

  • New discoveries at Mokarta, a Bronze Age hilltop settlement in western Sicily

    Open Access•Christopher Sevara, Roderick B Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2020•Referências: 12

Extensive settlement activity at the Bronze Age site of Mokarta in western Sicily has previously been inferred, but the extent and condition of its subsurface remains have never been established. The authors use geophysical prospection, historical and modern remote-sensing data and soil chemistry to identify previously undocumented structures and activity areas extending beyond those exposed by previous excavations. This exercise not only has imp…

    Open Access•Radoslaw Guzinski, Elias Spondylis et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2016•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

Bathymetry maps derived with satellite-based multispectral sensors have been used extensively for environmental and engineering coastal studies and monitoring. However, so far this technique has not been widely exploited in other coastal applications, such as underwater archaeology. Submerged settlements and shipwrecks are often located in water depths where the application of multispectral satellite data is feasible. This could lead to more effi…

  • The Marausa Wreck, Sicily

    Open Access•Francesco Tiboni, Sebastiano Tusa•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

In 1991, the wreck of a late 3rd–early 4th century AD Roman merchant vessel was discovered on the west coast of Sicily that had carried North African amphora, tubuli, and other ceramics. The hull was dismantled and raised in 2011, including a keel hook-scarfed to stem and sternposts, 39 pegged mortise-and-tenon joined planks, 43 frames with an irregular pattern of floor-timbers, half-timbers, and futtocks fastened to the planking with treenails a…

  • The Levanzo I Wreck, Sicily

    Open Access•Jeffrey G Royal, Sebastiano Tusa•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2012•Citada por: 5•Referências: 15

Between 2005 and 2009 a deep-water shipwreck was located, mapped, and partially excavated by a joint team from RPM Nautical Foundation and the office of the Soprintendenza del Mare, Sicily. Located off Levanzo Island, one of the Egadi Islands off north-west Sicily, this wrecked merchantman revealed a mixed cargo of foodstuffs, coarseware, glass, and construction materials. The nature of the wreck-site, its cargo, operational date, and find-locati…

  • The Acqualadroni Ram Recovered Near the Strait of Messina, Sicily

    Open Access•Cecilia A Buccellato, Sebastiano Tusa•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2012•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

Within the framework of the activities of the Soprintendenza del Mare of Sicily, a bronze ram was recovered just north of the Straits of Messina, in the area of Acqualadroni. This paper discusses technical and iconographic features of the ram and compares them with others found in Sicily, Piraeus, Tuscany and Athlit. The study shows the Acqualadroni Ram has more analogies with the latter, although it also has unique features. Radiocarbon dating s…

  • Physico-Chemical Characterization of the Acqualadrone Rostrum

Open Access•Francesco Caruso, Maria Luisa Saladino et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2011•Referências: 28

The archaeological discovery of the Acqualadrone rostrum (an offensive naval weapon mounted on the prow at the waterline), off the Italian coast near Messina in 2008, has led to the need for scientific research in order to plan the conservation treatment of this artefact. The discovery is exceptional because of the presence of a wooden section from the original ship. This paper describes the physico-chemical characterization of a metallic and two…

  • Settlement Structure and Organisation

Open Access•Magnus Artursson, Jens-Henrik Bech et al.•CHAPTER•Organizing Bronze Age Societies•2010

This chapter compares the structure and organisation of settlements across Europe, bridging the chapters on regional settlement patterns and households. The settlement represents the local organisation of habitations: how households were placed with respect to each other and to common spaces for work, ceremonies, and social interaction. Important variables included the density and number of contemporaneous households, the permanence of house site…

  • The Lead Ingots of Capo Passero

Open Access•PHILIPPE TISSEYRE, Sebastiano Tusa et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2008•Citada por: 4•Referências: 6

Epigraphic and isotopic analysis of the lead ingots recovered from a shipwreck off Capo Passero (in Sicily) in mid‐2006 suggests that the ingots were produced in Spain, in the Cartagena region. The shipwreck is estimated to have occurred around 38 BC, at the beginning of the Hispanic era. This provides further evidence that the Romans were trading lead throughout the Mediterranean Sea

    Open Access•M A Mannino, MA Mannino et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2007•Citada por: 12•Referências: 18

Oxygen isotopes in shell carbonate samples from the marine rocky‐shore intertidal gastropod Monodonta turbinata (Born) are investigated in both modern analogue specimens and in archaeological specimens from the Grotta dell’Uzzo (Sicily). Variations in shell edge values of δ 18 O in living specimens collected monthly over two years are closely correlated with monthly seawater temperatures measured at the time of collection, showing that the specie…

  • The Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age landscape of interior western Sicily

Open Access•Michael J Kolb, Michael Kolb et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2001

The archaeology of complex societies in western Sicily has traditionally focused upon Greek and Phoenician colonization rather than the development of the indigenous peoples of the interior. The Salemi regional survey project in western Sicily was conceived as a means to track long-term landscape change of this interior 'indigenous' landscape. From 1998 to 2000, this survey has conducted an extensive survey of 150 sq. km of the Salemi region, an …
