Student Success Teams and on-Track to Graduation Status in Oregon
This study was designed to investigate the impact of a student success team intervention on the ninth grade on-track to graduation (9G-OTG) rates of students in Oregon. Interrupted time series (ITS) models were used to estimate the baseline change in 9G-OTG rates during the four academic years prior to the implementation of the success team intervention (2013–2014 to 2016–2017) and in the 5 years that followed (excluding 2019–2020). Results demon…
Application of a Hybrid Regression Discontinuity Design to Evaluate the Generality of a Summer School Treatment Effect
This paper demonstrates the application, analysis, and interpretation of a Hybrid Regression Discontinuity (HRD) design. HRD is a combination of a Regression Discontinuity (RD) design and a Randomized Control Trial (RCT). The HRD was implemented in conjunction with a summer literacy program administered by a school district in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Students scoring below a lower cutoff of 30 words correctly read per minute (WCPM) in the spr…
Snap Judgements
The purpose of this study was to investigate the amount and distribution of subjective discipline incident (SDI) office referrals across a four-year time period in a large school district in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Descriptive and inferential analyses applied to district SDI data revealed that Latinx students were underrepresented in SDI referrals in elementary school but overrepresented in middle and high school. Results also indicated that …

Modern Quantitative Methods for Evaluation Science
In recent years, quantitative research methodology has become more conceptually integrated and technically sophisticated. Fundamental insights regarding design and analytic frameworks that support causal inference along with the development of estimation algorithms appropriate for multilevel and latent variable models have altered traditional methodological practice and ushered in new appreciation for the underlying relationship among modern data…
How Does Fidelity of Implementation Matter? Using Multilevel Models to Detect Relationships Between Participant Outcomes and the Delivery and Receipt of Treatment
Multilevel modeling techniques facilitated examination of relationships between fidelity indicators and outcomes associated with a summer literacy intervention. Three-level growth models were specified to capture the extent to which students experienced instruction and to demonstrate the ways in which dosage–response relationships manifest in program evaluation contexts. The observation that outcome-related deviations from program protocol occurr…

The Inventory of Teacher-Student Relationships
This study investigates the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Inventory of Teacher-Student Relationships (IT-SR), a measure that was developed by adapting the widely used Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachments (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987) for use in the context of teacher-student relationships. The instrument was field tested with a sample of African American students from low-income backgrounds (N = 171). An exploratory factor …
Treatment Fidelity in Multisite Evaluation
Program implementation data obtained from the repeated observation of teachers delivering one of two early childhood literacy programs to economically disadvantaged students in a large southwestern school district were analyzed to estimate protocol adherence levels at the onset of the intervention as well as the change in adherence over the intervention period. Application of multilevel growth models to the classroom observation data revealed tha…
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the TerraNova Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills/5
Confirmatory factor analysis was used to explore the internal validity of scores on the TerraNova Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills/5 using samples from a southwestern school district and standardization samples reported by the publisher. One of the strengths claimed for battery-type achievement tests is provision of reliable and valid samples of student achievement in specific content areas. Results of the present study showed that specific co…
Teachers' Perceptions of School Climate
Scores from a revised version of the School Level Environment Questionnaire (SLEQ) were validated using a sample of teachers from a large school district. An exploratory factor analysis was used with a randomly selected half of the sample. Five school environment factors emerged. A confirmatory factor analysis was run with the remaining half of the sample. Goodness-of-fit indices indicated that the factor structure fit the data reasonably well. F…
A Multilevel Multisite Outcomes-by-Implementation Evaluation of an Early Childhood Literacy Model
The evaluation of an intervention delivered across multiple treatment sites presents a unique opportunity for evaluators to gauge the manner and degree to which the “impact” of treatment varies across implementation conditions and different target populations. However, the availability of implementation data for each treatment site, while presenting the opportunity for more sophisticated impact assessment, also presents an analytic challenge. In …
