  • A 50,000-yr Pollen Record from Chile of South American Millennial-Scale Climate Instability during the Last Glaciation

    Open Access•Linda E Heusser, Linda Heusser et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1999

High-resolution (∼≤100 yr sampling interval) Chilean pollen data between ∼10,000 and 60,000 cal yr B.P. exhibit systematic fluctuations in Subantarctic Parkland development. These variations are dominated by a 30,000–40,000-yr cycle similar to that in the Northern Hemisphere GISP2 δ 18 O data and other climatic records. Both Chilean and GISP2 data show oscillations in the 5000–12,000 and 1000–3000-yr period bands. The coherence is, however, gener…

  • Climate, vegetation and glacier fluctuations in Chile, between 40°30′ and 42°30′s latitude — A short review of preliminary results

    Open Access•Björn G Andersen, George H Denton et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1995

  • Tropical Climatic Variation on the Pacific Slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes Based on a 25,000-Year Pollen Record from Deep-Sea Sediment Core Tri 163-31B

    Open Access•Linda E Heusser, Nicholas J Shackleton•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Marine sediments from 3°37′S, 83°58′W yield a well-dated pollen record of equatorial Andean vegetation. Moderate development of Podocarpus -high montane rainforest (∼34,000-28,000 yr B.P.) and increase of high Andean grassland pollen (∼28,000-16,000 yr B.P.) imply an extended dry, cool glacial period following a brief interstade. Rapid stepwise expansion in coastal and montane forest pollen characterizes the deglacial interval. The general corres…

  • Late-Glacial to Holocene Changes in Winds, Upwelling, and Seasonal Production of the Northern California Current System

Open Access•Constance Sancetta, Michell Lyle et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1992

A core 120 km off the coast of southern Oregon was examined for changes in lithology, diatoms, and pollen over the past 30,000 yr. Primary production during the late Pleistocene was about half that of the Holocene. Evidence from diatoms and pollen indicates that summer upwelling was much weaker, implying an absence of strong northerly winds. Early Pliocene diatoms found throughout the late Pleistocene section were probably derived from diatomites…

  • Climatic Change at the End of the Last Glaciation in Japan Inferred from Pollen in Three Cores from the Northwest Pacific Ocean

    Open Access•Linda E Heusser, Joseph J Morley•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1990

Late-glacial pollen time-series from high-sedimentation-rate marine cores KH79-3-C6, CH84-04, and CH84-14 show the rise of successional vegetation (typified by Betula ) during the replacement of boreal forest types ( Picea and Pinus ) by thermophilous Quercus forests. Variations in these three marine pollen records replicate the trends and timing of pollen records from Japan and the structure and timing of vegetation and climatic changes on the P…

  • Younger Dryas Climatic Reversal in Northeastern USA? AMS Ages for an Old Problem

    Open Access•Dorothy Peteet, D M Peteet et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1990

Late-glacial macrofossils from a 10-m core from Alpine Swamp, New Jersey, were radiocarbon dated using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The arrival of the first trees to the area following deglaciation is indicated by maximum percentages of spruce pollen and a date of 12,290 ± 440 yr B.P. on a single spruce needle. Subsequent spread of deciduous hardwoods was followed by the expansion of boreal taxa, including spruce ( Picea ), fir ( Abies ),…

  • Pollen and Radiolarian Records from Deep-Sea Core RC14-103

    Open Access•Linda E Heusser, Joseph J Morley•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Using modern pollen and radiolarian distributions in sediments from the northwest Pacific and seas adjacent to Japan to interpret floral and faunal changes in core RC14-103 (44°02′N, 152°56′E), we recognize two major responses of the biota of eastern Hokkaido and the northwest Pacific to climatic changes since the last interglaciation. Relatively stable glacial environments (∼80,000–20,000 yr B.P.) were basically cold and wet ( 8°C and >1200 mm m…

  • Pollen Distribution in the Northeast Pacific Ocean

    Open Access•Linda E Heusser, Linda Heusser et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1977

Distributional patterns of palynomorphs in core tops from the continental margin of the northeast Pacific Ocean (30°–60°N lat 118°–150°W long) reflect the effects of fluvial and marine sedimentation as well as the distribution of terrestrial vegetation. Maximum pollen concentration (grains/cm 3 of marine sediment) occurs off the mouth of the Columbia River and off San Francisco Bay (the outlet of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers) and appears…
